Meeting of Buccaneers and Axe Men
Late into the night a meeting of the cult groups lingered and dragged till early morning. The Buccaneers were mad over their man who was killed in the attack against Michael. They wanted blood, but the Axe Men were against that, and arrogantly brandished their ruthlessness in cult wars. “We have had eighteen wars in my time in this university, out of that Buccaneers have only won three. We all know what Axe Men did in the other fifteen wars. We are not afraid to go to war. However, this time we want things done differently. Let the bloodshed cease! I beg of you. The Axe Men confraternity are willing to pay for your brother who was killed by accident. Please listen to reason! Your brother was killed in error. I can assure you that the men who shot your brother have been treated to the dreaded Axe Men punitive measures. Dead men are better than them as we speak,” the Number one of the Axe Men confraternity persuaded Buccaneers passionately.

Several times Buccaneers asked to be allowed to discuss the matter alone. Each time the Axe Men obliged them and waited for them to arrive at a consensus. Just before dawn, the leaders of Buccaneers confraternity named their price and terms of peace. They asked the Axe Men to pay five hundred thousand naira for their man who was killed and also demanded that his body be handed to them. Earlier Buccaneers had demanded that Mujib and Aafro be handed to them. However, Axe Men bluntly refused. They were concerned that to hand one of their top marksmen to a rival cult would send the wrong message to the other cult groups on campus.

After a peace deal was brokered that morning between the two cult groups, the body of the young man who was killed along with the Buccaneer, was dug up from his grave and taken to a morgue along with the body of the young Buccaneer. Buccaneers had to go to the morgue to claim the body of their colleague. The body of the young Buccaneer was sent home to his parents along with four hundred thousand naira – part of the penalty paid by Axe Men for killing their colleague.

Season of Peace
Though on the surface it looked like there was peace between Buccaneers and Axe Men, the leaders of Buccaneer confraternity schemed in secret with Dekunle on how to kill Mujib. Dekunle was still not happy over what Mujib did. He felt slighted and swore that he must kill Mujib. So as peace returned and members of both cult groups who had fled from campus at the prospect of war, returned, Dekunle and some Buccaneers perfected their plans to deal with Mujib.

Two days after the peace deal, Aafro, Wande and all the Axe Men being held at the shrine of Axe Men were released.

On the other hand, Suzan had heard that Michael and his friend, Tosin, were not the ones killed in the hit and had begun to look for him on campus. Still afraid, Michael and his friends, Tosin and Deji remained in Ijebu Igbo. The hit had made them popular than they had planned to become that soon on campus.

In faraway Lagos, there was some piece of Good news, Chima and Lanre were actually not dead. Chima’s parents had pressed all the buttons within their reach to keep their son from being killed by the police. Lanre parents had also pulled their weight behind Chima’s parents and in the end, they parted with huge sums of money to keep their children from being killed.

Michael and his friends who had turned their lives over to Christ were overjoyed when they received a call from Chima narrating how his parents and Lanre’s parents had fought to keep them from being killed. He informed them that his parents were so worried about him that they had decided to send him off to Ghana to live with his uncle and continue his education there.

Later they gathered from Deji’s sister that Lanre’s parents had sent him off to Benin Republic. The plan was to have Lanre continue his education there too. The transformation in the lives of Michael and his friends at first looked like a fluke, but with time, it proved to be for real.

Suzan almost went crazy looking for Michael on campus. The events that took place had made her fall madly in love with him. Sadly, for her, Michael had become wary of ladies and especially Suzan. It was a drama to see Michael running from Suzan as she did everything she could to make things up with him. While the drama played out, there was still no sign of Mujib on campus. It bothered Michael especially after Suzan began to pester him once more. Dekunle had not told him what they did to Mujib for attempting to kill him. Though Mujib was still alive and had recovered from the beating he was given, Axe Men sent him away for fear that Buccaneers might kill him.

A month after the near death incident Michael had on campus, he left for Lagos. He needed the change of scenery very much. When he got home, he went shopping for new clothes and stayed at home for three weeks; by the time he returned to school, he was like a freshman, he began a new life. He rented a new apartment far from his old one. He was determined to put his old life far behind him. Even Deji and Tosin had to get separate apartments for themselves. In a total turn of events, the three friends grew up rapidly by the things they had been through. While their fellow students sort opportunity to get involved in school politics and to hustle the hottest chicks, they paid fervent attention to the activities of their campus fellowship. It was at this stage that Michael realized that he actually had no purpose for living. Until the attempt on his life, all he had dreamt of were party, money and girls.

He could feel that life might have a great plan for him, one he had not thought of. In his new found life and the zeal with which he embraced it, he found joy and satisfaction in the things he had ridiculed in the past – preaching the gospel and planning his future.

In spite of his efforts to avoid her, Suzan would not give up on him, she was about to write her final examinations and leave school, but somehow she felt drawn to Micheal. “Pelumi, that guy is in my future. I can swear on it. I know it like I know my name,” Suzan would tell her friend. “But babe, all this started like a fling, how come you are this serious about him? You are about to leave school, you can’t get into him,” Pelumi would caution. “Yes I know, but this is more like fate. I hate the fact that he keeps avoiding me.” “You have got to give him some time, maybe he will come round; you never know,” Pelumi said to encourage her friend.

While Suzan waited, Michael made sure he put as much distance between them as he could. Sadly, for Michael, on the day he made up his mind to visit Suzan and tell her that there was no chance they would ever have anything to do with each other again, he ran into Mujib in her apartment.

Michael felt his heart drop to the floor at the sight of Mujib. Afraid his nightmare was back again, he turned around and bolted off. Two guys who were with Mujib went after him and threatened him to stop running or they would shoot him. Left with no option, Michael stopped and followed them back to Suzan’s apartment. He had no idea what to expect, but he knew it would be bad.

“You are one tough boy. Your stubbornness reaches to the sky. Did I warn you to leave this girl alone?” Mujib asked, his face devoid of any expression. “You did and I left her long ago…” “So what in the world are you doing here?” “Suzan has been embarrassing me on campus with her incessant pestering. I am sick of that; I came here today to let her know that nothing can ever happen between us in this life. Never! Not while I breathe,” Micheal said, his words laced with anger. Mujib looked from Michael to Suzan and then did the unthinkable.

He dropped to his knees and asked, “Mike, please will you forgive me? I am sorry for the things I did to you.” Both Michael and Suzan were shocked. With mouths wide agape they stared at Mujib in utter disbelief. “Is this your new prank to make me love you again? So, you are playing Mr. nice man now?” Suzan asked derogatorily. “You are wrong Suzan. I came here to let you know that if you choose to love any other man, you are free. In fact I will recommend Michael,” Mujib said, still kneeling down. “Are you high on something Mujib? What have you been smoking? Please get up!” Suzan barked. “I am not kneeling down for you Suzan. I am on my knees because of Michael. Michael, is there a chance you will forgive me?”

Michael could tell Mujib was serious. His eyes moistened and he took a step closer to him. “I have already forgiven you. It took something as staggering as you for me to realize I was headed for destruction. I had no purpose, no plan and no vision in life. All I wanted in life then were sex, women, party and money. I even had no clue about how to get the money. It took my encounter with you for me to realize just how much I was lost in life. Stand up Mujib, you are forgiven. The life I live now, I owe it to you,” Michael said, raising Mujib to his feet.

In a corner of the room, Suzan sat in a heap sobbing deeply. She could not believe her ears and eyes. “Mike, I am leaving her for you. Please Mike, don’t leave her, there are few good women like her,” Mujib said as he headed for the door. “Why are you doing this? What made you have a change of heart?” Michael asked. “I want to die a hero’s death,” was Mujib’s reply. He let himself out of the room leaving Suzan and Michael in shock.
