Nigeria's leading fictional story blog - lord of the Circle of Stars, shade, The Riches of the Dead’, the dead, Michael’s grave, held her bible open to Psalm 23.

“Jesus! Michael did all these? He is the devil himself! It scares me to think that he had been a close friend all these years! I could have been like one of my friends!” exclaimed Melinda. “How did he come back to life and who is in his grave?” Austin asked. “The elders of the Circle of Stars brought him back to life after his death in Malta. Like I said, it was required of him to die and wake through the ‘The Riches of the Dead’ for him to become the lord of the Circle of Stars. And believe me when I say this, Michael attended his own burial. He was around on the day a shade was lowered into the earth as Michael. He can do things beyond anyone’s imagination because he has an army of the dead at his disposal; he commands many souls of the dead. Both the few he has killed and the ones killed by the members of the circle of stars over the years. They keep their bodies as trophies and use them to do their biddings. The souls of the dead are there slaves; they work for the members of the Circle of Stars.”

“What do you mean by a shade?” “A shade was the person everyone saw being lowered into the ground as Michael; a shade is a dying member of the Circle of Stars, who donated his body for certain rituals to be performed on it to hold the souls of the dead whom his new master had killed, and to keep the bond between them as lord and slaves. This is what I mean, through a shade; a star lord can summon the souls of those he had killed. Particularly those ones who took part in the rituals of ‘The Riches of the Dead’. By the way The Riches of the Dead’, means the riches of the Star lord who died but has risen to command the riches of his dead ones – those he had killed or will kill though ‘The Riches of the Dead’.”

Melinda and Austin listened raptly; they couldn’t believe what their ears had heard. “You told me Angelique was seen at Beach Palm after her death, well that wasn’t Angelique, it was Michael. He can use the bodies of his dead slaves as he wills. These dead slaves can sometimes resist his will and try to break free, but his hold over them is so strong that they eventually yield to his power,” Osoba continued. “We saw Angelique, Lanre and Obiorah in Uyo. They pleaded with me to dig up Michael’s grave. Was that Michael using their bodies?” asked Melinda. “No, that was a case of the dead souls looking to break free from their lord.” “How then do you plan to dig up something as strong as this?” Austin asked. “Those who revealed this mystery to me in Calabar, also told me what to do. When I came here earlier to dig up Michael’s grave, it was the souls of the dead in the grave who took possession of my friends. Till now the bodies of my friends have not been seen, I fear they have become the risen dead.”

After Osoba had said that, he asked Melinda a question which startled her, “Melinda, did you by any chance put on the clothe Michael sent to you?” Both Austin and Melinda couldn’t figure out how Osoba got to know about the clothe Verah took from Mr. T. “How did you know about the clothe?” asked Melinda in utter shock. “Have you worn it Melinda?” Osoba asked again, with his voice slightly raised this time. “No, I haven’t. I dumped it into a trash bin at Chocolat mall.” “Thank God you didn’t. Had you worn it, your soul would have been bound to Michael’s soul. He has his eyes on you. He desires to take you as his bride; in fact, it was for this reason that he came to you when you met him at the drugstore.” Melinda was shocked when Osoba said that. Her heart began to beat fast; there was a time when she nursed the desire to spend her life with Michael, but that was in the past before Austin came her way.

“Is there no other way of stopping Michael other than digging up his grave? I am really scared right now,” Melinda said. “My two friends here have dug up shades on a few occasions; I brought them because of their experience in this sort of task. I don’t know about you and Austin, but we are ready to confront whatever is in that grave. On the other hand, if you two are afraid to come, you can check into a hotel, when we are done we will call you.” “No Osoba, we will be there with you. Baby we have to be there, this ends tonight,” said Austin.

Melinda grudgingly nodded her agreement. Later in the night, they all drove down to Eku-Obhiosa in a Toyota bus. The villagers did not bother with what anybody did with Michael’s grave; rumours had for some time been milling about in the village that Michael’s grave was hunted. There were a few gory tales by some villagers about the horrors they had encountered around his grave. If his grave was meddled with a thousand times, they wouldn’t give a hoot. As a matter of fact, most of them would be very glad to see the grave dug up to destroy the evil they feared inhabited it.

When they arrived some distance near Michael’s father’s residence, they stopped their bus and quickly took their tools and headed for the lonely grave. Melinda had made a stop on the way to buy a pocket bible; as soon as they alighted from the bus, she firmly took hold of Austin with one hand and held her bible open to Psalm 23 and read aloud, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me…” Osoba’s friends, Etim and Ochuma didn’t waste time to set to work. They dragged a big chain across the grave and set a small calabash atop it. The calabash slowly burrowed it way into the grave and disappeared from sight.

Melinda and Austin could not believe their eyes; they were too stunned by what they saw to ask questions. Etim and Ochuma began to dig from one end of the grave. Osoba stood at a distance, wielding a sharp machete; in the background Melinda continued to recite Psalm 23:4-6.  As the two men dug the grave ebulliently, out of the blue, Simon and two young men stormed the grave site, firing gun shots into the air. Melinda and Austin scampered into the bush; while Osoba and his two friends stood their ground sizing up Simon and the two guys by his sides.
