Shrine of the Axe Men
The moment was tense, Dekunle was in a foul mood, and so was Mujib. To Dekunle, Mujib had gone too far by pointing a gun at the number two of the Axe Men confraternity. With his gun pointed at Mujib, Dekunle was hatching a heinous plan to make him realize he had broken a sacred law of the Axe Men. The only thought on his mind was blood, and he would have it. “Mujib, I hope you know that your position as the number four in this confraternity is under threat by the mere fact of pointing a gun at me?” Dekunle asked, his face wrapped in monstrous frown.

The reaction of the guys on Mujib’s side gave Mujib the impression he was in trouble. Dekunle had raised a sore point. He may have been a quiet guy, but he had venom at his tail. He hardly took prisoners. His words may have been terse, but they spoke volumes and everyone present understood them.

The guys who had been working with Mujib to eliminate Michael advised him to lower his gun and apologize. Mujib was a haughty guy. He was the sort with offensive arrogance. He only lowered his gun and ignored the part about apologizing to Dekunle. Angry that he did not get to kill Michael, Mujib tried to give conditions upon which he would let Michael walk free on the campus, “This bastard you call your cousin can only live and study on this campus on my terms…” His words almost drove Dekunle insane. Being a man who had control over his emotions, he calmed himself and interjected, “And what are your terms Mujib?”

“Michael must not tell Susan what transpired in this place today. He should never be seen around Suzan, and I want him to leave his current apartment for a new one. If he does all these, he might walk free on our campus,” Mujib said with his usual bloated air of importance. “I am very sorry Mujib. My cousin can only do the first two. He paid for that accommodation a after few weeks ago and does not have the money to pay another one,” Dekunle pointed out, sounding very pissed off.

Mujib wanted to argue and demand that all his three conditions be met, but his guys who knew Dekunle very well, talked him out of it. They could see there was trouble already, but Mujib’s pride would not let him see what was coming his way. “Untie my cousin and take him to our doctor!” ordered Dekunle. He shoved his gun in his hip, picked a spot in a corner of the shrine and began to smoke weed. He was so angry his hands shook. “I swear by God, I will kill this guy in his best moment,” Dekunle swore under his breath. Drawing a heavy puff of smoke from the weed, he blew it out slowly into the air. As his guys helped Michael, Dekunle was seen casting angry looks at Mujib, who foolishly returned same at Dekunle.

When Michael was informed about the conditions on which he was let go, he was all too glad to keep to them. Against Mujib’s wish, all the things which had been taken from Michael were returned to him.

The School Community
When it was time to drive Michael to the doctor, Dekunle joined them to make sure nothing went wrong on the way. After receiving medical treatment at the doctor’s hospital, Michael was taken home to his apartment. For long spell of hours and days, Michael was in shock. He could not believe he made it out alive from that shrine, especially after watching those guys dig his grave.

To make sure Michael was not left alone in his apartment, Dekunle took Deji’s and Tosin’s phone number from Michael and called them. He asked them to come back to the apartment and take care of their friend and assured them that they all were safe. Sleeping was hard for Michael, he would shut his eyes for a few minutes and then jump out of sleep panting heavily. At other time he would wake with a scream.

When he was left alone in the room by his friends, he would crouch in a corner of the room and pray to God for mercy and forgiveness over his wayward life which almost claimed his life. It was at this period that Michael began to value the words of his parents. He could see clearly how he wasted his life running after women and doing things he considered in sober moments as worthless. In spite of himself, he cried deeply, letting tears flow from his eyes.

The day that God miraculously saved Michael, the believers gathered in Suzan’s house had prayed out their hearts and later left with the conviction that God had heard their cries for him to save Michael. Till a few days later, Suzan, did not know if Michael was alive or dead. She knew it was over between her and Mujib and made it clear to him through a text message. That message drove Mujib nuts and left him wondering if to go after Michael again, in spite of the understanding he had with Dekunle. When Suzan finally found out that Michael was alive, she knew it could only have been God. That act of mercy by God permanently changed Suzan’s life.

It was only a week later that Tosin informed everyone how he had helped in saving Michael’s life. While Michael was being driven down to the shrine of the Axe Men to be executed, he had gone in search of a hitman a classmate of his told him could help. On his way he was accosted by some Axe Men sent by Mujib. They were sent to find out from him who Michael’s parents were and how rich they were. From how they sounded, Tosin figured that the cultists may have been thinking of making some money off Michael’s parents before killing him. So, he decided to tell them lies about Michael’s parents.

Tosin was beaten silly by those guys for his account of who Michael’s parents were not tallying up with what someone else had told them. When they left him, he ran to inform school security about the assault on him. Fortunately, he ran into Dekunle whom he knew from his neighbourbood in Lagos. Dekunle knew him of course and wanted to know who beat him up. After narrating what had happened that day to Dekunle, he knew he had to rush down to the shrine of the Axe Men to save Michael.

“Wait Tosin. Do you mean you were the one who sent Dekunle down to help me?” Michael asked, his eyes moist. “I didn’t send him down to the shrine to help you. I only told him about our troubles. He did not even tell me he was going to do anything. All he did after I narrated to him everything that happened was to walk away without a word. I was surprised when you mentioned he was the one whom God used to save you. I didn’t know he is a cult guy,” Tosin explained. “Me too. He is very gentle. When I heard the confidence in his voice when he called us to come take care of you, immediately, I knew he must be a kush man,” Deji said.

While Michael and his two friends basked in the miraculous manner in which Michael was delivered from the jaws of death, Deji and Tosin were wondering how to tell their friend that the police had picked up Chima and Lanre; and that there was rumour that Chima had told the police about the rape incidents in Michael’s father’s house during the party. Deji and Tosin knew that bit of sad information could make Michael’s heart stop after what he had been through. However, they felt the need to tell him because if it was true, the state police command in Osun State could be ordered to arrest them any moment.

Mujib’s Apartment
“Suzan has broken up with me, and it is all down to that bastard, Michael!” Mujib announced to the guys in his room. “So you want us to hunt her down and give her the same treatment as other girls,” inquired one of the guys. “No. Nobody should touch Suzan, my grouse is with Michael. I want him dead. I know Suzan loves him and so long as I am on this campus, she will never get the chance to love him. I want us to eliminate Michael,” Mujib said, his eyes flaming with hatred. “Number 2 will not be happy about that Mujib,” observed another of the guys. “To hell with number 2!! I want Michael dead and that’s it!!!” Mujib yelled so hard one could hear the pain of the break up with Suzan in his heart.

Silverbird Cinema, Jabi Lake Mall, Abuja
Felix had his arms around Candy’s body with his right palm open before her. From the open palm, Candy was picking up popcorn with her tongue. A movie was showing, but the two of them were more interested in themselves that in it.

Two days before Candy and Felix went to the Silverbird cinema, this conversation had taken place at home between Candy and her sister.

“Felix is not human. He is not real. That is the only reason he could be this good. He must be a dead man who died without a bride and must have come back to life to have what he could not have then,” Candy had said to her sister, Joy. “Hahahahaha! You have been saying that for weeks Candy! I think Felix is real. The guy loves you,” countered Joy. “Shut up Joy! What I have with him cannot be real. Already I am preparing for him to dash my heart to pieces.” “If my hunch is right, and it always is, Felix is going to disappoint your expectation of dashing your heart to pieces. The guy is from heaven. Love him babe and stop being afraid!!” “I don’t know how to Joy,” Candy confessed with tears on the edges of her eyes.
