“What do you mean by setting up your divorce?” “I intended to present her with some evidence of her infidelity and ask for a divorce. I could have chosen another way to end the marriage, but I chose the path of honour. I hated being divorced, but if I had not, she would have killed me. However, before I was ready to demand a divorce the worst happened. Maybe she got a whiff of my plan…” Emmanuel stopped talking. “What exactly did she do? What made you think she was going to kill you?” “She offered herself to a business partner of mine and asked him to help her get rid of me.” “How do you know she did that? What if it was the other way round? What if this business partner of yours was the one trying to bed her?” “Take it easy Joy! My ex-wife admitted to doing that.” “She did?” “Yes she did.” “But I don’t understand, why go to someone to help her kill you when she could have poisoned your food?”

“She did poison my food…” Emmanuel became emotional and his eyes moistened. Tenderly Joy asked, “What happened?” “Our only child, Maya, ate the poisoned food before I could get to eat it.” Emmanuel began to sound hoarse as he narrated the story. Joy held him close to her frail body and tried to comfort him. “I am sorry for doubting you. I didn’t know you went through this much. I really am sorry. I have been having doubts about you since after our wedding. I have been thinking that maybe my head wasn’t clear when I accepted to marry you. Our worlds are different like day and night. I can’t even tell myself what it is you like about me. I am a poor girl from a humble background, I don’t feel like I have anything to offer you in this marriage, and I don’t want to live in fear of that.”

Emmanuel continued like Joy hadn’t interrupted him, “Maya was my sunshine. She liked to share my food with me. She had gone to visit with cousins and was not expected back that weekend. When she came in and saw my food on the dining table, she called out to me to come join her and scooped a few spoons of the food. What kept me from eating the food before she arrived was my dog Bruno. It liked to play a lot; and in quite some time I didn’t have time for it. So I thought I should spare it a few minutes; those few minutes with Bruno saved me, but not my daughter. My ex-wife was in the bathroom and didn’t hear Maya calling me to come eat.  I was still playing with Bruno when I heard Maya vomiting in her room. The poison went through her body in minutes, she died in my hands.”

“Oh my God and you still paid your ex-wife one hundred and fifty million after the divorce. She should have been charged for murder and hanged on the gallows!” “The money was a ruse. It was never paid. She filed divorce and I acknowledged it and we quietly settled the case in secrecy. I didn’t want the media to hear the truth. I didn’t want my face on the front page of newspapers telling gory stories about my life.” “No honey, you should have made her to suffer!” “Well she is suffering just as I am.” “Is she sick too?” “No, she is hunted by the ghost of Maya. Her family thinks that I invoked Maya to go after her but I didn’t. I simply handed her over to God.”

“Do you mean Maya actually hunts her like a ghost? As in a g-h-o-s-t!!” “Yes. She can’t sleep at night. She claims to be seeing Maya in her dreams every night forcing her to eat from a plate filled with blood.” “Baby stop! The story is too creepy.” “I want you to stop doubting me. Stop being paranoid. I love you for who you are. I love you because I love to love you. I love you because I want a simple life, and you are a simple woman. When I saw you at the hospital the first time I felt something about you. I felt like I had known you all my life. You know like deja vu. When I got home that day I heard myself praying to God that if he would let you live, I would marry you.” “You asked God that without knowing me. What if I was a witch?” “But you are not a witch. Are you?” “No, I am not, but you can’t see someone for the first time and go praying to God to marry the person.” “Honey you don’t understand. Look I am as surprised as you are. I expected myself to be a woman hater by now, but when I met you something broke for good on the inside of me. You hurt me much when you turned my first proposal down.” “I am sorry. I was hurting then; I didn’t know what to believe.”

For two years their love blossomed. Shortly after their wedding, Joy was moved to the US for further treatment and returned to Nigeria healthier after five months. There was no improvement on Emmanuel’s part, Doctors still expected him to succumb to prostate cancer in a year’s time. However, when the time came, it was not Emmanuel who was being wrestled from the clutches of death. It was Joy. She had become ill again, but this time it was not brain tumour; it was kidney failure. She seemed certain to die until Emmanuel donated one of his kidneys to keep his wife alive.  After Joy had successfully received the new kidney and recovered fully, they returned to Nigeria. Contrary to doctors’ diagnosis, for two more years, Emmanuel lived fine and didn’t have issues with his prostate cancer condition. However, on March 16th 2012, his condition worsened. He was flown back to Ariedney hospital in New York where he had been receiving treatment. The doctors made it clear to Joy that Emmanuel’s chance of survival was nonexistent.

However, Emmanuel held on, and battled to stay life. Because of the radiotherapy treatment he had received for his prostate cancer he could not father children. But good enough before he started the treatment his doctors had advised him that if he wished to father children after treatment for prostate cancer, his best chance was sperm banking. Seeing he had a short time to live, Emmanuel and Joy discussed how to use the sperm deposit he had in the US. Joy assured him that she would give him from his sperm deposit as many children as he wished to have. They agreed to have four children and two of them to be named Emmanuel and Maya respectively, they also chose names for the other two. Emmanuel also signed some documents giving to Joy his only remaining kidney upon his death.

On the 23rd of August 2012 Emmanuel took his last breath while in Joy’s embrace and was quickly wheeled into the theater to harvest his remaining kidney to transplant it into Joy. A year after Emmanuel’s death, Joy returned to the US to make use of Emmanuel’s sperm deposit. Her first Child for him was a baby girl and she named her Maya. At the moment Joy is pregnant, she plans to name the baby Emmanuel if it is a boy and if a girl, she would call her Love in memory of the love she shared with Emmanuel before cancer took him away from her. This was their plan before Emmanuel passed on. Joy is still regularly visiting hospital for checkup, just in case she records another brain tumour case.
