Melinda’s phone rang and startled her. She reached for the phone and the caller was Michael. She whispered to the others, “It is Michael.” She put the phone on loudspeaker and they all listened attentively to Michael. “Melinda, are Verah and Simon there with you?” “Yes they are here.” “Can I speak with them?” “Go on they can hear you,” replied Melinda. “Okay friends I know you must be wondering about what is happening to our friends and how is it that I am alive. Now here is the truth, all of you were deceived that day on that beach in Malta. You were not told the whole truth about ‘The Riches of the Dead’.

“I am aware you know the part where you wish for a certain person’s destiny and the person dies leaving his destiny for you…blah, blah blah. Well there is also the part where the dead, or should I say the person whose destiny you wish for gets to make a wish before he/she dies. I was napping on that plane to London; it felt strange. The plane had hardly taken off when I felt a strong urge to sleep. In my short trance, a being visited me and told me I was going to die and explained to me why I was going to die. He asked me to make a wish before my death, and that my wish was also part of the ritual called ‘The Riches of the Dead’.

“I made my wish before the plane land crashed; and my wish was to come back someday and take every one of you back to my grave. I have taken Angelique, Obiorah and Lanre. Only the two of you, Verah and Simon are left. Right now I have three hours left to return to my grave, I want the two of you to know that I am coming for you. Part of my wish that day was that none of you would be buried, you must have heard that Angelique has taken a walk from the morgue; so shall all of you roam the earth after death until your body parts fall apart.”

The phone made a clicking sound and the line went dead.

The Riches of the Dead was an ancient Persian ritual which originated in northern Persia, probably in the seventh century BC. The practitioners of this ritual were so deep into dark magic and the study of galactic bodies that they were able to spot the “The Star of Bethlehem”. They were ace prognosticators and star readers. Their lord was Ahura. They could shift, delay, manipulate and transfer destinies as they so wished. It was a follower of this dark magic that Verah and her friends ran into on that beach in Malta.

“Oh God! What am I going to do now? I am a dead man walking!” exclaimed Simon. “Michael has to understand that none of us would have gone ahead with the ritual if we had known how evil it was. I don’t want to die now,” cried Verah pleadingly. “Look there is no time to sorrow, we have only two hours fifty-five minutes to find a solution to stop Michael,” said Austin. “Wait! Wait a moment! Could it have been death that came for you Verah at the restaurant today?” asked Melinda. “I don’t know what it was, but it sure was going to kill me.” “Why did you ask Melinda?” queried Austin.

“If it was death from Michael, that means we have already beaten him once today! All we have to do now is go back to the young man who prayed for Verah and all this will be over,” Melinda said with the excitement that she had found a solution to their challenge. Simon raised his head like a serpent and asked, “Do you have the guy’s number? How do we reach him?” “He gave me his phone number; I saved it as Strong Pastor,” replied Melinda.

Melinda began to search through her phone book to find the guys number. Her search took longer than expected; for no clear reason she just could not find the name in her phone book. Verah grabbed the phone from Melinda and tried to find the entry Strong Pastor. After a brief moment she announced disappointingly, “You didn’t save it Melinda, it is not here.” She tossed the phone back at Melinda. “What do we do next?” asked a terrified Simon. “All of you get into my car lets go back to that restaurant and look for the pastor. There must be someone there who knows him,” announced Austin.

They all ran out and got into Austin’s car and drove off to the restaurant.  When they got there, they spread themselves around the neighbourbood and began to ask people if they knew the pastor who prayed for a sick lady earlier in the day. Most of the people they spoke to didn’t know a thing about him, while others were not around when the event took place; they had only heard it from others. Out of options, they entered the restaurant to ask the workers there; sadly, no one had seen him before nor could tell a thing about him. Austin kept glancing at his wristwatch to know how much time they had left. At this time, he really was afraid for Verah and Simon.

“Can’t we find another person to pray for Verah and Simon? Must it be that same guy who prayed for Verah earlier today? We are running out of time! We have lost fifty minutes looking for this guy!” said a frustrated Austin. “Who do you suggest we go to right now?” Melinda asked. “Anybody who can pray, will be just fine,” replied Austin. They all went outside and stood by the sidewalk. “I am feeling giddy, my head swooning!” shouted Verah as she sat on the sidewalk. “What is it Verah?” Melinda asked.

They all rushed toward Verah to get her off the sidewalk. “What do we do Austin? I feel Michael is here! I feel him!” shouted Simon. Verah clenched her teeth and held Melinda’s hands with a firm grip. “Verah talk to me! What’s happening to you? Talk to me please!” shouted Melinda amid sobs. Suddenly Verah shouted, “Something is moving into my body! Aaaah! Aaaah!”

With that shout, Verah began to stretch as if the life in her was fading away. Her legs began to jerk as though they were getting longer. Simon forgot all about his own troubles and grabbed Verah’s stretching legs and pushed them toward her abdomen as if that would keep death away. Passers-by began to rush to the scene. This time Austin was the one who asked for prayers, “Please can anyone pray for my friend or at least take us to someone who can?” Austin fought back tears as he made his plea. “There is a church down the end of this street, let us take her there!” shouted someone in the crowd. There was no time to get Verah into the car, many a man lifted Verah off the sidewalk and bore her hastily down to the church. Even Simon lent his hands to carry Verah to the church. He had in the heat of that moment forgotten that he too was a target. As those strangers who bore the flailing Verah ran to the said church, a mammoth crowd followed on their heels.
