Austin stepped into the room. When Melinda saw it was her boyfriend, she threw herself at him, crying soulfully. “What is it? What is wrong with you?” Austin asked. “I don’t know. I am afraid. I sense fear all around me, it is everywhere. I was on the phone with an old friend when he suddenly went silent and after a few moments, I heard…I think heard a woman crying in desperation like she was being killed.”

“Where is your phone?”

“It is in my bedroom.”

The two of them went into the room and saw the phone on the bed ringing. Austin picked it up and gave it to her. The call was from Michael.

“Hello Michael! What was that? Who was the woman being killed?” “Are you sure you are okay? I was on the line saying ‘hello’, but you said nothing. I had to drop the call and call you back, but you wouldn’t take my call,” explained Michael.

“I am sure I heard a woman crying desperately. You were silent; I was the one saying ‘hello!’” “Are you still alone?” “No. My boyfriend is here now.” “Can I speak with him?” Melinda passed the phone to Austin.

“Hello! I am Michael, Melinda’s old friend. I think the death of one of our bosom friends who died today is affecting Melinda, keep a close eye on her. Maybe she beginning to see and hear things.” “Thanks dude. I will keep an eye on her.”

Austin passed the phone back to Melinda and she said goodbye to Michael and hung up the phone. “Your friend doesn’t think you heard anything; should I take you to a hospital? You are still in shock.” “The two of you should not make me appear insane, I know, and I am certain that I heard a woman in trouble crying desperately,” Melinda countered.

Melinda searched through her phone book, looking for a number; she found it and placed a call to another friend of hers. The phone rang momentarily and the friend picked up, “Hi Lanre!” “What’s up Melinda?” Lanre’s voice sounded groovy and made Melinda ask, “I guess you haven’t heard about Angelique’s death?” “Are you high on something Melinda? Angelique is here with me. We are at Beach Palm Resort,” said Lanre.   “You are with who?! Put her on the line! Let me hear her voice! What you have beside you is a ghost! Angelique died this morning on Maya Avenue! Lanre run! Run away from her!”

“Are you nuts Melinda? From where I am standing now, I can see Angelique dancing with my friends.” “Go to her and put her on the phone. I want to speak with her.” “Okay Melinda, drop the call, once I get to her we will call you.”

Melinda sat down on the sofa wondering if she had gone insane, “Why are all the dead people I know coming back to life.  Baby, the guy you spoke with some moments ago had been dead for six years now. At least I was told he died in a plane crash six years ago in Malta. And this morning I ran into him alive and well in a drugstore. Right now Lanre is claiming to be at Beach Palm Resort with Angelique, who died this morning,” Melinda said, sounding very perplexed.

“How did you learn your friend whom I spoke with was dead?” “Friends told me; I got a call from them while I was in London and I saw pictures of his burial. It all happened six years ago, and today, I ran into him who was supposed to be dead. I was told he died in a plane crash.” “And now the very Angelique who showed you pictures of Michael’s burial is dead and somehow back to life according to Lanre,” Austin said as he pondered the mystery. “The reason I learnt of Angelique’s death before others was that I had called Angelique on my way to work after I had run into Michael to inform her that Michael was alive, but she didn’t pick up.

After the accident that led to her death, someone called to inform me of it. The stranger who called me said I was the last person who tried to establish contact with Angelique. They saw my missed calls on her phone.”

“Baby I am famished, let’s go fix dinner; Lanre will soon call and we will solve this entire riddle. Right now I can’t wrap my head around it.” The two of them went into the kitchen and began to prepare a meal. The events of the day made Melinda very contemplative and taciturn. Though she was a live wire who made friends laugh a lot and often was in a playful mood; but that night she was withdrawn; the events of the day had shaken her very core. As she cooked, she kept glancing at her phone hoping to hear from Lanre.

When the wait seemed interminable, Melinda asked Austin to dial Lanre’s number. Austin obliged her request and placed a call to Lanre from Melinda’s phone. Lanre’s phone rang but he didn’t pick up. By this time, Melinda was tethering on the edge of hysteria. “Call him back! Something is wrong!” Melinda almost scared Austin out of his skin by the way she shouted. She was so much on the edge that she did not know her voice was way too loud.

“Okay love, you don’t have to shout that way, I am dialing his number again. Can you calm your nerves please?” This time the phone didn’t ring, they got through to the answering machine which said the number was not available. At this point Melinda could not bear the whole drama and suspense any longer; she sort of crashed. Austin had to finish the cooking and served the food. Melinda nibbled at the food and went to sit in the living room extremely morose. She probably tried Lanre’s number a hundred times that night, and each time she got through to the electronic voice saying the number was not available.

When Austin who was as hungry as a lion was done eating, he came over to the living room and bore Melinda on his laps and tried to get her to cheer up. If all the jokes Austin told her helped her sullen mood in the least bit, it did not in any way show on her crestfallen look.

By the next day Melinda convened a meeting of all her old friends so they could figure out what was going on. Michael cited a few reasons and opted out of the meeting. When they all gathered in Melinda’s house, her foremost concern was to find out if anyone had seen or heard from Lanre and if he was okay. Obiorah informed Melinda that Lanre was in the hospital and was being looked after by medical doctors.

The story was that he had strangely lost his memory the previous night in search of someone amongst the crowd on the beach. He kept running around looking for a woman, when he was asked who he was looking for he could not supply her name. This Lanre kept doing all night until he collapsed and began to foam in the mouth. His friends at the beach that night rallied and shipped him to a hospital where doctors diagnosed him to have had memory loss.

“I know the woman Lanre was looking for,” said Melinda. All her friends turned and stared at her, waiting for her to give them the name of the woman. She continued, “Lanre was looking for Angelique. They were somehow together last night at the Beach Palm.” Melinda’s friends thought that perhaps, Melinda had gone nuts. They stared at her in utter disbelief. “Melinda are you okay? Angelique died yesterday morning how could she have been with Lanre by night at the Beach Palm?” asked Obiorah.  “I spoke with Lanre when he was at Beach Palm last night and he said he was with Angelique. Austin was around, he heard the conversation.”

“Yes, I was here and I heard the telephone conversation. In fact Lanre thought Melinda was mad for saying that Angelique was dead.”

“That is not all, friends, Michael Ighalo is in town. Somehow he is no longer dead. I met with him yesterday morning and Austin has also spoken with him”, Melinda explained further.  Her words hit some three people in her living room like bullets - Obiorah, Verah and Simon. Obiorah fell off his seat as though an invisible hand had hit him with a four by two plank on the back of his head, and began to gasp for breath. Verah and Simon were swallowing saliva nervously, their eyes darting about in fear.
