“Congratulations ma, you are going to be a mother,” the doctor said, beaming with a smile as he handed the test result over to her. Itohan was shocked but managed to smile so as to drown any curiosity it might arouse in the doctor. With shaky hands, she opened the envelope and read the report. Itohan would have been elated at the prospect of being a mother after several years of childlessness, but not this time. She was confused how she turned out pregnant when she wasn’t having sex with her husband. She stopped at the car park in front of the hospital and reopened the medical report confirming her worst fears; she was indeed four weeks pregnant. All she could think of was the one evening she spent in the arms of Sammy. She quickly called Mimi and asked to meet her up.

“What happened? You sounded worried over the phone,” Mimi said, as Itohan walked into her apartment. With tears in her eyes, Itohan announced, “I am pregnant.” Mimi jumped and hugged her friend tightly. She was a bit confused as to why her friend who always wanted a baby was sad. “You don’t look happy considering you’ve always wanted to be a mother for a very long time,” Mimi said with genuine concern. Itohan narrated how she had an affair with Sammy when she learned her husband has a child with his mistress. “I think the baby is for Sammy,” Itohan said in a tone of finality. Mimi was taken aback by the fact that Itohan had an extramarital affair considering her conservative nature. She comforted her friend and didn’t bother to suggest abortion because she knew Itohan would never abort a child she took five years to have. Itohan made a decision on her way home to mend ways with her husband hoping that when they communicated better, she would open up to him.

As usual, she was greeted with rose flowers and chocolate bars when she returned home.  For the first time since Nosa’s confession, she allowed herself love him anew.  Nosa was elated at his wife’s responses to his advances; he carried her to their room and made love to her.

Nosa smiled sweetly at her as they lay spent on their king-sized bed, he noticed that Itohan wasn’t looking happy, “Is anything wrong my love?” he asked with genuine concern. “No baby, the events of the past few months still linger in my memory, that’s all,” she said. “I am genuinely sorry for all the hurts I have caused you, I was under a spell I guess,” Nosa said with genuine remorse. She kissed his lips lightly and replied, “Let’s forget all that, let’s start a new chapter together henceforth.”

Days turned into weeks, Itohan finally announced to her husband that she was pregnant. It was like the love he felt for her at the beginning tripled, he was smitten all over again. He couldn’t stop gushing about how beautiful Itohan was and how God had finally heard his prayers. In the dead of the night, Itohan would shed tears of regret cursing herself for making that decision when she was blinded by anger. She wished she could go back in time to undo what she had done, the thought of shattering Nosa’s happiness by telling him the child wasn’t his made her heart ache. Itohan was afraid Nosa might leave her if he found out she had an affair; she didn’t want to lose him a second time.

While Nosa was busy baby proofing their entire home as Itohan’s due date drew near, she found every excuse to postpone telling her husband the truth. Nosa noticed she wasn’t happy and simply felt probably the events of the past still brought sadness to her heart. Although he really wished he could take all that sadness away, he knew he had to give her time to heal in her own way.

Meanwhile, Mercy wasn’t tired of trying her luck with Nosa despite the warning from Baba. She stalked him everywhere and even opened new social media accounts with fake names commenting on virtually all his pictures and posts. She was in and out of depression several times and soon realized that in an effort to manipulate Nosa, she got entangled herself. She felt she was in love with him and she couldn’t help herself. In the heat of her obsession with Nosa, she made a decision to get him back at any cost even if it meant breaking the law.

Few days’ later, Mercy set the stage for Itohan to be robbed and possibly brutalized. She later found out the thugs did not beat Itohan as she ordered because she fainted the moment the first blow landed on her head.

The black metallic venza sat in the garage of her rented apartment; she would wait for dust to settle before she decided what to do with it. She wasn’t very happy when she discovered her ex-lover bought the car for his wife; that was when Mercy decided to retrieve what she felt was rightfully hers. She badly wanted Itohan to lose her baby; she wished her death.

Itohan who was due in a month was discharged from the hospital few days after the robbery. Everything was back to normal until Nosa came home one evening looking distraught. His hair was dishevelled and his eyes were bloodshot red. He walked straight to where she was sitting and demanded, “Whose baby are you carrying?”

Nosa stared at Itohan with sadness in his eyes, “Babe, you deceived me!” he yelled. Itohan was dumbstruck because she didn’t know whether to admit his accusation and beg for mercy. Tears flowed freely and she looked at him with pleading eyes, willing him to understand. “Nosa, it was one time I promise” “It matters not to me if it was once or a hundred times, but you deceived me into thinking the baby was mine all along!” Nosa yelled back at her, slamming his fist into the hard concrete wall. Itohan struggled to her feet and reached for her husband who immediately backed away from her, “Don’t touch me,” he said and walked into their bedroom.

Itohan followed him and kept wondering how her husband found out about her affair with Sammy. “Odomwen (my husband), please forgive me, it happened the day you told me about your child. I was so hurt,” Itohan recounted. “You kept it away Imose, but why? I am sure you are wondering how I found out” “Yes, how?” Itohan asked. “Mimi told me!” Nosa said in calm tone. Itohan’s head was spinning in circles as she couldn’t wrap her head around why Mimi of all people would snitch on her. She found it hard to believe but she knew it had to be her because apart from herself, no one else knew about her affair. She didn’t even tell Sammy she was pregnant; she broke all ties with him after that night.

“Haaaaaaa!” Itohan cried out in pain, Nosa rushed to her side and caught her before she hit the ground. He laid her gently on the bed and caressed her protruding belly. He had grown to love the baby growing inside of her as his own. “Baby, I am so sorry,” Itohan managed as she winced in pain. “Don’t worry yourself baby, we will sort it all out later. For now, let’s focus on the baby,” Nosa said cleaning the tears that had drawn a path on his face.

Loud knocks on the door interrupted the couple as they tried to make sense of what was at stake. Nosa rushed to the door and was greeted with shock when he opened the front door. Mercy was standing in front of him looking drunk and very upset. “What the hell do you want?” Nosa queried as she swiftly stepped into the living room before he could shut her out. She looked around as if she was an invited guest and took a seat on the sofa. She smiled at him and said, “You.”  She stood up and walked to where Nosa was standing in attempt to seduce him. She was oblivious of the fact that his wife might be at home; her desperation and obsession with Nosa drove her to seek him out at his house.  She was wearing the exact same gown Nosa first met her in and this time, she looked crazy. Judging from her appearance, she was hardly taking care of herself.
