Nigeria's leading fictional story blog - too heartbroken, a woman whose heart was in shreds, made love to Itohan on the couch, one-time affair, counseling sessions until his, marriage, bottles of alcohol down the sink, the condoms in his wallet.

Itohan was driving blind as she was oblivious of where she was going; she knew she needed to leave his presence before she did something she would regret. She felt a knife jabbing at her heart and the person holding the knife was no other person than her husband, Nosa. “So he has a child, why would he bother about me? No wonder!” she said aloud in anger. In her mind, he had betrayed the very ingredient their marriage thrived on, trust. Tears flowed freely, but she didn’t bother wiping them, she was too heartbroken to care about her look.

She was in front of Sammy’s apartment before she came to a stop, she wasn’t aware of her surrounding until she saw Sammy walk up to the side of her car. He opened the car, and she stepped into his arms weeping without control. He led her into his living room and offered her his broad shoulders to cry on. He didn’t ask her what happened, instead; he allowed her have a good cry while he did his best to comfort her. She looked very vulnerable and for the first time she let her guards down. The woman who had everything under control was gone, what was left was a hurting shadow of a woman whose heart was in shreds.

“Make love to me Sammy,” Itohan said as she started unbuttoning his shirt. Itohan was ready to throw caution to the wind and didn’t mind the consequences; all she wanted to do was yield her body to what it has always craved for. Sammy who had always found Itohan attractive and appealing was taken aback because of the situation surrounding her request. His refusal would have been met with disappointment if not for the fact that Itohan was fast enough to lock her mouth with his before he could protest. At that point, he couldn’t resist the woman who had haunted his dreams more times than he could remember. She was everything he imagined she would be; only she was much better. Sammy made love to Itohan on the couch amidst hot tears streaming down her face with every movement of his body against hers. She closed her eyes tightly and dared herself to enjoy the moment.

As they lay in each other’s arms on the couch after sex, Itohan knew nothing would ever be the same again. It dawned on her that she had made a foolish choice and that sleeping with Sammy wasn’t the right thing to do, despite her husband’s unfaithfulness. “What now?” Sammy asked. “We pretend this never happened,” Itohan replied as she stood to dress up. She walked out of Sammy’s apartment without looking back.

The silence was deafening as Nosa waited for 6 long hours before he heard the engine of his wife’s car pulling up in the garage. She walked into the house and went straight to bed without acknowledging his presence. All efforts by Nosa to start a conversation proved abortive as she would say nothing. Just tears flowed down her face as she closed her eyes in an attempt to sleep. Itohan was determined to keep her one-time affair with Sammy a secret, so as not to complicate things. She figured she would decide what to do with Nosa when she was more emotionally stable.

Nosa stared at his wife all through the night; he wondered what would become of their marriage. He decided he was going for counselling sessions until his marriage was back in good shape. For the first time in a long time, he knelt down and prayed earnestly to God to save his marriage.  He didn’t want to end up a divorcee like some of his friends; all he wanted was to have a good relationship with his wife devoid of third parties. After the prayers, he deleted Mercy from all his social media networks, flushed down the remains of the condoms in his wallet and turned the remaining bottles of alcohol down the sink. He made a decision to only contact Mercy when it concerned their child. He felt lighter afterwards but heaviness still lingered in his heart, he wanted Itohan to be happy again.

Mercy was shocked when she woke up to a text from Nosa stating that he was no longer interested in having a relationship with her. She laughed it off and decided to call him later in the day to determine the meaning of the text message. She became very worried when all efforts to call him proved abortive; he had blocked her from all his social media networks and chat rooms. Her worry turned into anxiety when she went to his office and was told by his secretary that Nosa had specifically ordered that she should not be allowed into his office. She shouted at his secretary and threatened hell and brimstone only to be led out by security for breach of peace.

She went straight to Baba; she wanted to know what went wrong with the charm he gave her after all, she was sure she did as she was told from the onset. “He saw it,” Baba said as she entered the scantily furnished room he used for consultation. “Saw what?” Mercy asked as she sat on the raffia mat on the floor. “He saw the potion I gave you, he wasn’t meant to see it. The moment he did, the charm lost its power and gradually he was freed from your hold,” Baba explained to her. Mercy’s mind flashed back and she remembered she had forgotten the potion in the bathroom after applying it in her private part only to wake up to find Nosa examining the bottle. She sighed in defeat and asked “What else can be done?” “Nothing my child, he is heavily protected now,” Baba said to her as a warning.

Nosa went for counseling and did everything within his power to win his wife over. She seemed to drift farther away from him the more his effort. He vowed never to give up and prayed everyday for God to touch her heart so she could forgive him. Itohan was already having a soft spot for Nosa barely a month after his confession. He was leaving sweet notes under her pillow with gifts every evening. He even prepared dinner for her although she knew cooking wasn’t one of his strong points. He treated her with utmost respect but she deliberately ignored all his advances thinking she would appear too weak if she gave in easily. Throughout the time, she never allowed Nosa touch her let alone sleep with her.
