Itohan looked around and didn’t recognize where she was. The bright lights hurt her eyes as she struggled to keep them open.  In a swift movement, she tried to get off bed. She yelled in pain, and winced as she gently lay back on the bed. “I see you are awake now,” said a doctor as he walked into her private ward.  She stared at him for a while before she asked, “How did I get here?” The doctor moved closer to her and adjusted the drip which got out of place when she moved suddenly. “It’s a long story madam, but to cut it short, a Good Samaritan brought you here, and your baby is fine.”  She was going to ask him more questions but decided it was not time. Instead, she closed her eyes and willed herself to remember what had happened earlier that day.

The kings’ square road was as busy as it was every other day and Itohan was in a haste to get back home in time to prepare her husband’s meal. She planned preparing ema and ukpogi (pounded yam and melon seed soup) which was his favourite.  Because of hectic traffic around the palace area, Itohan was oblivious of a black ford that had been tailing her for about an hour.  Two men dressed in black overalls sat behind the wheels and watched every move Itohan made. They followed her until she turned into the driveway leading to the luxurious apartment she shared with her husband.

The last thing Itohan heard as she got down from her car to unlock the gate was, “Get down!” She received a blow to her head before she had time to react to the command.

“Baby, I came as soon as I heard,” said Nosa, her husband, as he rushed to her side. The mere sight of him warmed her heart and she managed a weak smile.  He planted a soft kiss on her forehead before taking her hand in his.  He looked worried and wondered if his wife could sense it. As if guessing his thought, “My love, e gbe ran mwen (I am fine). It was just a minor incident. The doctor assured me the baby is in good condition,” Itohan said in a bid to reassure her husband. Nosa smiled and kissed the back of her hand before presenting to her the rose flower he bought on his way to the hospital.

Nosa and Itohan had a love relationship that people often described as made in heaven.  They met at the University of Benin where they were both studying for undergraduate degrees.  The bond they shared was solidly built on friendship, trust and genuine love. They became inseparable and decided to seal it by getting married five years earlier. Although Itohan was yet to conceive, Nosa was understanding and stood by her whenever pressure was starting to mount on her from family members. Chuks, their mutual friend often teased them by saying, “Romeo and Juliet should take tutorials from you two.”

“Baby, your car was stolen but I will get you a new one,” Nosa said trying to sound as casual as possible. Itohan sighed as she tried to hold back the tears that threatened to fall free.  The car was a Venza given to her as her anniversary gift from her husband the previous year. Her thought drifted to the day he presented the gift to her. Candle lights, rose petals and soft music filled the air as Nosa blindfolded her and led her to where the car was parked outside their beautiful home. When she saw the metallic black car at first, she thought it was his, but when he announced that it was hers, she was struck dumb. She grabbed his arm instinctively and kissed him with so much passion. Nosa who was her college sweetheart and was unarguably the sweetest husband in Itohan’s eyes, he could simply do no wrong.

“But baby, how come I didn’t even notice I was being followed?  Also, the voice I heard sounded quite familiar,” Itohan recounted. “Really? Did you catch a glimpse of the person at all?” “No baby, everything happened too fast.” “Okay, just don’t think about it, I am here for you,” Nosa assured her.

After he left, the events of the past few months flooded Itohan’s memory, she wondered if her attack had anything to do with Mercy, her husband’s former concubine. She closed her eyes and took a walk down memory lane.  About a year ago, she could have sworn that Nosa was heaven sent to her until she started noticing some difference in his character. At first, she wasn’t bothered but she started to worry about him when the attitude persisted.

Itohan woke up one morning and noticed that her husband wasn’t by her side; she wondered if he was working late again. She reached for her phone under her pillow and noted that the time was 5 am in the morning.  She went to the bathroom only to discover thick blood stains on her panties. Tears trickled down her eyes as she realized she had just had yet another miscarriage. For the past five years of her marriage, she had close to six miscarriages without any medical cause. Her family doctor had told her nothing was wrong. Her husband wasn’t half as worried as she thought he should be, seeing he had a staunch traditional background that greatly favoured child bearing. Besides that, he was from a polygamous home where his father married three wives because the first wife, Nosa’s mother was unable to bear more children. He often consoled her saying, “God gives children imosemwen (beauty). He will give us our own.”

She was hoping this pregnancy would stay so that their happiness will be completed by having a child of their own. Itohan decided there was no point telling him she lost another pregnancy which was only two months old. She cleaned herself up and went in search of her husband around the house.

“Don’t worry, it won’t be long,” Nosa whispered on the phone as he stood on the balcony. “How are you? Ok, did you like it? I will send you some money,” he continued. Itohan stood at the door as she listened to her husband hushing “I love you,” on the phone to an unknown caller. “Who was that?” she asked and startled him as he ended the call. “Oh! You are awake, it was a dear relative of mine,” he said. Nosa wondered how long she had been standing there and how much of his conversation she heard.  Itohan seemed contented with the explanation her husband gave since she has had no reason to doubt him in the past.

Mercy liked the new gift she just received from her benefactor. In fact, all her friends envied her and called her lucky because of the way he lavished gifts and money on her. They met four years ago and since then, they became lovers. She knew he was married but she was content being his mistress since he had money to spend, besides that, he had everything she wanted in a man. Her philosophy was to get what she wanted at any cost no matter who was involved. Mercy smiled at herself in the mirror as she brought out the powder she had been given by a powerful medicine man. She was told she would become irresistible to any man of her choice after using the powder. She applied a generous portion on her face before setting out for the day.

Mercy wasn’t the everyday ‘side chick’, she was one on a mission and she was out to destroy whoever crossed her path.  Nosa had become a tool in her hand and she vowed he was going to end up marrying her.

Nosa didn’t understand why Mercy was irresistible and wondered what kept him going back to her place. He met her at a friend’s bachelor party. Despite the beautiful girls that flaunted themselves generously in front of him, he firmly told his friends he wasn’t going to cheat on Itohan, the love of his life. Nosa was a disciplined young man, who though not much of a believer and despite the promiscuous friends he kept, still managed to abstain from having random sex.

He went to the bar to get a drink to avoid confrontations with his friends who were bent on setting him up with a girl, there he met Mercy. Mercy wasn’t half as beautiful as Itohan in any way in fact; Itohan was the true definition of an African queen. With thick thighs and perfect figure, she could drive any sane man crazy with her beauty. Mercy was only very light in complexion and attractive in a way he couldn’t quite understand. She locked her eyes to his, and like someone who was hypnotized, he found himself strongly drawn to her. She was wearing a black mini-gown which left very little to the imagination. His first thought was to turn away but Mercy grabbed his hand and willed him to stay. The more he kept staring at her face, the more he couldn’t resist the urge he was starting to feel below his belt. His friends cheered him on as Mercy gave him a lap dance and later dragged him off to a room for privacy. Nosa knew if Itohan found out about his affair with Mercy, she will be very hurt, so he decided to keep it a secret and hoped the attraction would fade away.

In a bid to stop the affair, he even made a confession to his parish priest who advised him to desist from such acts. However, his affair with Mercy was like a sink hole; the more he tried to get out, the deeper he sunk into an endless well of desire for her.
