“Alright Esther, I agree but…” said Mr. Stephen. While Mr. Stephen was still speaking Esther sprang toward him, hugging him excitedly. “I am going to be a university graduate,” Esther said pacing around the room, imitating the manner in which her sisters carry their bags when they return from school. “Esther are you still a virgin?” asked Mr. Stephen. “Yeees Uncle! Trust me on that one; you need not worry about me. I will keep it till I marry. And that is a promise!” Esther said elatedly. “Esther I want it.” Esther was stunned, she wasn’t sure she heard him right. “Uncle, you want what?” “I want your virginity. That is the price of university education,” replied Mr. Stephen. Esther was so shell shocked she stepped closer to her uncle and touched his forehead to know if he was running a high fever. “Uncle you seem very fine to me. Why do you sound out of sorts?” “Like I said that is the price of university education. All your five sisters paid it. Not one of them failed to. And you won’t be different, will you?” “Uncle please don’t do this, it is wrong. It is not right,” Esther said crying. “You see all of your sisters said the same thing and eventually did it. Let’s just do it and you will leave here with all the money you need for school,” Mr. Stephen said gloatingly.

The absence of remorse in her uncle’s voice and his shameless boldness finally got to her and she went off like cannon, “Hey! Mr. Pig, you can go sleep with your mother and send her back to school! In all your miserable, cursed and God-forsaken life, you will never see my undergarments, and much less touch my body. The entire world can sleep with you Piggy, for money but I won’t,” Esther said angrily as she headed for the door. “You are just a little child, you know nothing, if I don’t get to take your virginity from you, no other man will. As for education; hahaha! I will send you to school, but it will be the monastery. You will burn till your dying day unless you let me have it first,” her uncle said mockingly. Esther had a fiery temper; obviously her uncle knew nothing about it. When he mentioned he would send her to the monastery, she turned back, grabbed a side stool and made to smash it into her uncle’s bald head; but she managed to get a hold of herself and spit spitefully on the ground next to him and said with a cold, stern voice, “Mr. Pig I have told you, you waste your time. Instead I will sleep with you; I will go as soon as I leave this hotel, where you commit your sodomy, and sleep with the next man I can grab or that mad man we passed on our way here.”

That day, Esther had actually forgotten she had no fare to get back to the slum they called home. When she stormed out of her uncle’s hotel room in anger the last thing on her mind was how to get home. When she realized it, she told herself she would walk all the way home. All manner of thoughts flew through her mind as she walked by the road side. She was so absorbed in her thoughts that she was oblivious of her surroundings. A car had stopped to pick her but she did not know. She just kept walking, so the driver decided to drive slowly at her pace, and she still did not take notice of the car. A few passers-by had noticed the driver’s effort to get her attention and thought she was deliberately ignoring the driver. Then it occurred to the driver to honk his car severally at her to get her attention, and he did so very loudly and that was when she snapped out of her thought.

“Hello beauty where are you going, can I drop you off?” the driver asked. “Oh yes, you can,” she answered without thinking about it. The driver stretched his hand and opened the door for her and she stepped in. “I am Mr. Patrick Ugo and you are…” said the driver as he drove. “I am Esther Townsend.” “Oh! What a great name you have. Esther have any one told beautiful you are?” Esther blushed in spite of herself. She took notice of Patrick’s bad grammar but chose to ignore it. “Yes. My father tells me that often.” “Wow! He must be a proud man to has you for a daughter.” “I believe he is.” “You see Esther; I has money, a lot of money. I want you to let me love you. I want to maltreat you very well. Treat you like no man has. Nwa baby, what do you have to say?”

Esther who was choking under Patrick’s bad English said as she stifled a hilarious laugh, “No. Mr. Patrick, I wouldn’t want to be maltreated again, at least not today; I have already been maltreated as it is. I think that’s enough for the day.” “No! No! Nwa baby, you don’t understand, nobody can maltreat you like me. If you just say yes; I will show you that the maltreatment you enjoyed today is nothing compared to what I will do to you. I will take you to Japan, Hong Kong and we will spend time in the best hotels in Taiwan. Like I told you, I has a lot of money. We will shop in New York City. Bebe, just say yes to me and I will spoil you with money,” Patrick said pleadingly. “Ok Mr. Patrick, when I am ready to be maltreated I will let you know, I promise.” Mr. Patrick smiled happily; he actually thought the bebe had fallen for his lines.

After Esther told Timi about her experience with Mr. Patrick, he would tease her much about it. There were times Timi would pose as an importer and say to Esther, “Hello Bebe! I has money; let me maltreat you.” Esther laughing hilariously would find an object she would throw his way. Timi would duck and hide for cover. Esther’s pathetic story brought her and Timi much together. Esther ended up at the convent because that was the only way she could get to stay away from her sisters and the abuse they suffered in their uncle’s hands. But she by no means had the desire to end her life a nun, she considered herself a traditional apostolic nun with no intentions to live an ascetic life.

The events which shaped Timi’s intriguing life had begun when Mr. George Igiebor returned to the country from his long sojourn in America with a burning desire to become the governor of his state. His several attempts to win in the elections ended up in utter failure and Mr. Igiebor desperately sought means to become that governor he wanted very much. He had thought his education and life abroad as a-been-to was going to be enough, but he was dead wrong. Nigeria had passed the been-to era and this he found out for himself. However, he was bent on becoming the governor of South Eastern State, and his desire would take him to unfamiliar realms, the realms of voodoo and curses. In this diabolical realm Mr. Igiebor was offered a means to become the governor he craved for, but it was going to require ‘a small sacrifice’, so they told him.

Mr. Igiebor balked at the thought of giving the life of any of his family members and told the occult lords he would never do that. But they surprised him; they told him they were not interested in taking the life of any of his family members, immediate or distant. This aspect got Mr. Igiebor really interested in what they wanted him to offer. They told him they had been waiting for him to come to them and were aware of his challenges in the elections. For Mr. Igiebor to become the governor, they proposed he offer them his unborn child. This child they claimed would have something they desired as much as he wanted to become the governor of his state. If he were to agree, the child would be offered to them immediately after birth. Mr. Igiebor wasn’t even sure his wife might agree to the idea of having another baby. Also when he thought about it, he felt it was easier to offer an unborn child than any of the people he already knew, the pain and horror of that he knew would never leave him. So Mr. Igiebor weighed his options and agreed to offer his unborn child and the deal was sealed with blood between Mr. Igiebor and the occult lords.

Mr. Igiebor felt he got the better of the deal when he was told that his unborn child would not be slaughtered and offered to any god or spirit. No, the child will live as ‘a living sacrifice’. All he would have become shall be offered to the occult powers in the underworld. The child shall live in the streets without the love and devotion of parents and would never fulfill his great potentials. Mr. Igiebor was assured that he would become richer, more powerful and influential the more this child of his suffered and wandered through life in excruciating pain. Mr. Igiebor took comfort in the fact that at least this child of his would not be killed, no blood shall be spilled, he accepted all the terms of the covenant wholeheartedly. In the next round of elections, Mr. Igiebor, who unexplainably had become the electorates’ favourite candidate in the state won with a landslide result.
