Nigeria's leading fictional story blog - a perennially underachieving politician, killed, a taxi driver, if you could kill yourself, brother, I killed all of them, his legal parents, kidnapped and forced her husband, Pentecostal churches, to study in Hong Kong.

“I don’t know exactly what you have been told about me, but whatever it is, it is true,” Mr. Igiebor said, sorrowfully. Amanda stood speechless as hot tears flowed from her eyes. All she could manage to ask was, “Is he the reason we are going through all these pains lately?” “My sins are the reasons we are going through all these lately,” Mr. Igiebor replied. “Father you have betrayed us all. What happened to your dream of being a spotless politician? How did you come to this?” Amanda asked tearfully. “I became consumed with ambition. I wanted to succeed. I craved to banish the names they called me. You still remember, don’t you? They called me ‘a perennially underachieving politician’. During campaigns they carried placards calling me a taxi driver. They chanted for me to return to America and continue with my taxi driving. I only drove taxi briefly when I got to America newly. I wanted to prove them wrong. I only wanted to succeed,” Mr. Igiebor said regrettably.

“But there is no shame in being a taxi driver and there is no shame in failing. You taught us all these things. Didn’t you?” “If there was something I could do to change everything, I would do it so your mum could get healed and your brother and sister could return to life. If I could go back in time and change things the day I accepted to offer your brother as sacrifice so I could win the governorship election, I would do it.” “There is yet one thing you can do to make things right daddy.” “What is that?” “Die! Take your own life! I don’t ever want to see you again. You haven’t killed yourself, do it and I will erase the memory of you from my mind!” Amanda shouted.

“I would gladly do that if I could…” “If you could? You are wondering if you could. You have destroyed our lives, my brothers’ lives. My mother is mad because of you and my sister is dead because of you, and you are wondering if you could kill yourself. If you can’t, then I will do it for you.” “You don’t want to do that Amanda. I have bought your brother back with my life. If you kill me, you will then carry my curse. I will live and die in pains just like your brother would have.” “Really, you did that?” Her father nodded. “Thank God, at least you get to suffer for your sins,” she said gleefully. “I had thought I could do it - sacrifice my son. For years I blocked off guilt from my conscience or thought I did. I allowed the cult lords to dictate to me. But when I set my eyes on your brother, I knew I couldn’t go on. The pains in his eyes, the look of his face, his appearance, they all got to me. But I killed all of them; every one of them, I killed. Not one of the cult lords escaped me. I will live and suffer till I die, but I will take solace in the fact that they will burn in hell for all time,” Mr. Igiebor said, comforting himself.

Mr. Stephen, Esther’s uncle had met his Waterloo when he forced a newlywed lady into sex in his office so he could give her a job in his company. The lady could not bear the humiliation and shame she suffered in Mr. Stephen’s hands and so she took the undergarments she wore that day to a white-garment priest who laid a curse on Mr. Stephen. Esther gathered from her uncle’s employees that their boss had taken his usual excuse from work and left, the only difference this time was that he did not drive out in his car. He simple took a walk as though he was going to see someone near his office and was not seen again for mother than three months. He was eventually seen in the marketplace, stark mad and picking rubbish from gutters. Each time his wife and family members would make plans to remove him from the streets; he would simply disappear for weeks without a trace. This kept happening until the day Esther saw him beside Smart Price supermarket.

Esther’s sisters had discovered the consequence of their unholy act with their uncle after Esther had left for the convent. They learnt that incest was a taboo that carried a grave punishment amongst their people. A woman who has carnal knowledge of a man of the same blood will never be married. For this reason, unmarried women in their late thirties and early forties left their village for the city because of the stigmatization of being unmarried. In their home town every unmarried woman was accused to have slept with someone of same blood with her. As for their men who commit such an odious act, they were cursed with the curse of childlessness. Esther’s sisters then understood the reason their uncle could not bear any child and seldom went to the village. His wife had to adopt a male child after years of their trying to make babies without success. Esther’s sisters upon the discovery of the curse they had incurred joined different Pentecostal churches which were not very popular at that time and prayed for God’s mercy.

Even though Timi had recovered fully from coma, Amanda decided to leave him in the hospital for further medical care after doctors told her that Timi’s health was in a very bad shape. It was expected that Timi would have gained some of his weight back after the time he had put in at the hospital, but because of his bad health he still looked gawky. As for Mrs. Efe Igiebor, her condition had grown worse so much that doctors offered little hope of her recovery. The occult lords had made sure that they took three lives from Mr. Igiebor after he killed three of their elders. Mr. Igiebor had expected the cult to take more lives from his family, seeing that he killed many more of them afterwards. But some for some reason the cult had decided to stay their vengeance, however every day Mr. Igiebor expected their vengeance.

It took a few more weeks before Timi could regain his weight. Gradually Timi became acquainted with the idea that Esther was not the only person in his life. He now had a sister, a mother, though she was sick in the head and a monster biological father. Timi was forced to recalculate the number of his family members when Mr. and Mrs. Kelvin came to pay him a visit at the hospital and inquired from the doctors when he might be ready to leave the hospital. They informed Timi they were going to exercise their right as his legal parents, they wanted him back and were willing to take him out of the country. In fact, Mrs. Kelvin told Timi that she had already told her colleagues that her son was going to study in Hong Kong. Amanda’s world spun out of control when she heard what Mr. Kelvin and his wife were planning.

Since she came to grips with the fact that Timi was her brother, she had become very protective of him and had begun to plan her life with him in it. Besides the blood relationship between them, Amanda had more reason to want her brother by her side; he was a very interesting person to have around. Timi’s handsome look for which Sister Gbemisola nicknamed him “dazzler” had begun to blossom again.  Amanda had caught some female nurses in the hospital spying on her brother’s handsome physiognomy and talking about him. She did not want Timi taken away from her, there had to be a way of stopping the Kelvins from taking her brother from her. For the first time since she told her father to kill himself, she went to him for help.

“How exactly do you think I will explain his disappearance for about thirty-one years? I am done covering my many past sins. Mr. and Mrs. Kelvin have earned the right to claim him as their son. I threw him away and they adopted him, showed him love and even helped to save him from me. I am done Amanda, I can’t help you,” said Mr. Igiebor. “But there has to be a way to resolve all these. I don’t want Timi taken away from this family as though he was never a part of us. Please help me daddy!” Amanda pleaded. “There is too much evidence out there that I threw your brother away for personal reasons. How do I cover them up? What do you want me to tell the court about his being in an orphanage home for eighteen years without my trying to bring him home even when I knew where he was?” Mr. Igiebor asked.

“Amanda, when you come up with a solution that won’t require my having to lie about what I did to your brother, I will back you up,” he continued. “Timi is the only person I have left; you have to understand. Mum is sick and you… I don’t know what you are to me anymore. In fact, you are dead, really dead. Timi is the only one I have left in this family right now and I won’t lose him to anybody. Maybe I should go talk to my lawyers about this, I am done with you,” Amanda said angrily. “You have no case here. The whole situation is hopeless. If I get invited to testify in court, and I will be; I will tell the court the whole truth. Don’t waste your time, little girl. Just go to the Kelvins and reason with them, appeal to their conscience, maybe they will let you have him for a while. Did I tell you that I had Mrs. Kelvin kidnapped and forced her husband to return Timi to the orphanage after his adoption?” Mr. Igiebor asked. “Daddy I am not shocked at all by that, if you tell me now that you killed your father and rapped your mother, I will believe you,” said Amanda.  She lied; actually she was stunned when her father told her what he did. On the other hand, she thought that her father was right about her going to appeal to the Kelvins for them not to take Timi away.
