After labouring in prayers, Nkechi went to sleep in her mother’s room. Having spent longer time in prayers than she planned, she was eager to catch some sleep and wake up to get ready for work. She set her alarm to make sure she didn’t oversleep. Though she managed to catch some sleep before waking up again to prepare for work, her brief sleep was haunted. She spent that brief period of sleep fighting with naked men who tried their best to force themselves on her. In her dream, it was as though all the men in the world had undressed and came after her. Wherever she went to, there were naked men running after her with determination to defile her. Nkechi’s mother had to occasionally tap Nkechi on the shoulder to stop her from speaking while she was asleep. After Nkechi had woken up and prepared to leave for work, her mother call her for a brief chat. “Whatever this attack is, we are going to overcome it in prayers together. I wish you were not going to work this morning. There is much need for us to pray and fast. Can you fast at least for half the day? I will be fasting and praying for you till evening,” Nkechi’s mother assured. “My work is stressful but as it is, I have no choice than to fast. This is very strange, I have not seen anything like it before,” said Nkechi. “Fear not my daughter, greater is he in you than he that is in the world. We are more than conquerors through him that has loved us…have you spoken with Kalu lately?”

“I will give him a call as soon as I get to work. I saw confusing images about him in my dream. I saw him bound with ropes and his face covered with a black mask. Something is definitely wrong, but I have no plans to let whatever it is triumph over me. I will pray till I see my victory.” “Yes, that is the spirit my daughter. I asked you about Kalu because in my dream, I saw him in an old rusty cage lowered into the ground. I have the strong feeling that whatever or whoever is after you, is after him as well.” “I am confused mummy; in my dream they were using his face to try to have sex with me.” “Lai lai (never!)” Nkechi’s mother shouted. She grabbed her daughter, placed her right hand on her head and commanded, “In the name of Jesus, I release fire of the Holy Ghost on your body. Every foul spirit released from abyss against you, I command that they be swallowed by fire in the name of Jesus!!!” “Amen!!!” shouted Nkechi as she and her mother broke into another round of prayers. The first gleam of dawn was about to break out of the sky when they stopped praying. “Mum, I am going to be late for work. I have to leave now.” “Okay, I will be here praying for you. Mummy is not going anywhere today!”

At work Nkechi placed a call to Kalu when she got a breather from so much she had to do. Thankfully Kalu took her call but acted as though he could not remember who Nkechi was. Nkechi was so shocked that her mouth hung open for minutes. “Kalu are you okay?” she asked in disbelief. “Can I call you back lady? I am having a tough time right now,” said Kalu. “Did you just call me lady, baby? What’s going on with you?” Nkechi asked, hardly believing her ears. “Let me call you back lady, my head is not together right now,” Kalu pleaded. “You are right Kalu; your head is certainly messed up right now. If you still can remember who you are, please start praying now! Something is going on in the spirit against us! Start praying now Kalu!” Nkechi yelled into the phone. The phone line went dead with a beeping sound. Nkechi pondered what just happened and placed a call to her mother. “Mummy, you are right. Kalu is under a spell. He called me lady over the phone and could hardly place who I am.” Nkechi said painfully. “I have been battling spirits in prayer since you left. Two of my friends are on their way to our house. I saw your picture lying on the sea. This is the work of darkness! This is voodoo at work against you and Kalu! Please no matter how you feel don’t go to see Kalu! Those who sent this attack want you dead,” Nkechi’s mother warned.

“Okay, I will do my best not to think about him. It is tough, but I will try. I feel like running to his office now,” said Nkechi. “Do not! Don’t even think about it. There is danger in doing that!” said her mother. Some minutes after that telephone conversation with her mother. Nkechi felt the same lustful feeling which had overcome her last night. Though she tried to bind the thoughts, yet they kept coming at her mind. As she worked on her computer, she heard suggestions in her mind to have a peek at porn sites. When she could no longer bear the thoughts, she stood up and went to the bathroom to pray. On her way back she ran into Dayo, one of her male colleagues at work. “I have been looking for you Nkechi. There is a file on your desk, the boss wants you to attend to it right away,” Dayo said. While he spoke, Nkechi felt a lustful pull toward him. Dayo could see the way she was looking at him. She was barely controlling herself. “Are you okay NK,” Dayo asked as she made to walk away. “I am fine. Maybe not exactly fine, but I am okay,” Nkechi paused to say. Dayo grabbed her hand in an attempt to detain her a bit. “Let me go, you said the boss wants me to attend to the file immediately,” Nkechi said lamely.

“I can actually handle the file for you if you aren’t feeling well. The problem with you is that you don’t give boys anything,” Dayo teased. “Don’t I buy food for you guys at the restaurant. What else do you want me to do for you. Maybe you want me to trip down for you like the other girls abi (right?). Mumu, see your head (fool, big head).” “That won’t be a bad idea, you know,” Dayo said, feeling encouraged by the fact that Nkechi allowed him to hold her hand a bit longer than usual, even though he was caressing it. That was very unlike her. Dayo on his part was burning with passion for her which seemed to burst out through his undergarment. He could feel some charged chemistry between the two of them. “Leave me jare (please),” Nkechi said as she turned to go back to her desk. For no reason at all, Dayo reached toward her breasts, brushed her hands over them and squeezed them gently.  Nkechi moaned and pulled herself away. She walked hurriedly toward her desk, sat down and placed her head on the desk for a few minutes. Dayo walked thoughtfully back to his desk. He was scared and at the same time surprised.

The Nkechi he knew would have slapped him for doing what he had done. She would have created a big scene which would have led to his sack. Her decision to do nothing was encouraging and at the same time scary. She could choose to report him to their boss later. When Nkechi raised her head from the desk, she seemed very much unlike herself. Dayo kept looking at her, trying very hard to read her mind. In between his stare, Nkechi would also look across his desk.  Her eyes were full of lust. Dayo was encouraged by what he saw. Suddenly, Nkechi stood to her feet and ran upstairs. At that point Dayo almost fainted. Finally, she is going to report me to the boss, Dayo thought. He stood up and ran after her. When he got closer, he received a stern warning, “Dayo! Stay away from me or I will make you regret what you have done.” Nkechi’s voice was cold and mean. Dayo had to retrace his steps and went back to his desk, waiting to be summoned to their boss’ office.

When Nkechi returned from her boss’ office, she shut down her computer, picked her hand bag and the file her boss sent for her to work on, and walked over to Dayo’s desk. “The boss wants you to work on this file right now. When I come back to work tomorrow, you will answer for what you did today. My work here is done for the day,” Nkechi said and headed out of their office building. Dayo calmly followed her outside and began to plead with her not to report the matter to their boss. Still fighting those sexual urges, Nkechi chose not to look at Dayo or say a word to him. She kept walking till she was outside their office building. As if on cue, a taxi slowed down before her and asked where she was headed. She didn’t have the time to say a thing to the driver, she wanted to run away from Dayo as fast as she could. Her entire body was on fire, craving for a man’s touch. Back at the sea, the prophetess and Bola were making incantations over Nkechi. The effect of the prayers Nkechi, her mother and those in their house had said were being felt by the prophetess and the horde of evil spirits at her beck and call. Now it was a fight to the finish between both parties.

On the taxi back home, Nkechi felt a pull to call Dayo to come pick her up at a certain restaurant. She was thinking in ways and manners which surprised even herself. The taxi driver was shocked when she suddenly began to yell prayers, making commands in the name of the Lord. The driver for a moment thought his passenger had gone nuts. He slowed to stop her, but Nkechi shouted at him, “Don’t stop! Keep driving please! Evil people want to destroy my life!” The elderly driver felt pity for her and stepped on the gas. A few minutes later, the driver asked, “Young lady, should I take you to a church?” “No sir, take me to the address I gave you, my mother and some people are praying there right now,” she replied.
