“What were you doing?” “I helped him hold the lady’s legs while he raped her. When he was done I took over. Actually we were going to let her live. But she did something stupid; she called Mr. Edem by his full name and told him that she was going to report the rape. She must have seen something that had his name in the car; Mr. Edem didn’t hesitate. He pulled out a knife from somewhere in his car and slit her throat. Believe me Gbenga, I was shocked; I didn’t even know the old man had a knife in his car.  I will forever live with the image of the lady, gasping for breath while her body jerked as blood fountained from her neck. Having killed her, we had to clean up our acts.”

“How come we couldn’t get any of your finger prints on her body?” “We wore gloves. After she was dead, we had to wait for her blood to drain out and we also cleaned off all the pieces of our flesh under her nails. She was a strong girl; she dug her nails into our bodies and tore our flesh. I guess we were too much in a haste that was why we missed the little one you found. As for the saliva, it came from Mr. Edem. Believe me, the man is a dog, even after the lady was dead he kept kissing her body. I had to wipe off the saliva on her body with alcohol; I must have missed a spot.” “We noticed alcohol on her body, but not in her bloodstream. We figured it must have come from the broken Red Label bottle found in Abel’s car. Where is the murder weapon now?”  “Edem Inyang told me he took it to his village and tossed it into a river.”

“Now tell me, why was Itoro killed?” “Itoro was the one who analyzed the DNA samples found on Monica, he knew that there was evidence which proved that someone else was at the crime scene, so when it didn’t show up in police report he became suspicious and told his father. His father assured him he would look into it; and to give him the confidence that he would, he asked him to get him samples of the DNA tests and a video of the investigation materials. Even though Itoro did that, he still had plans to go public, so his father paid someone inside the lab to poison him.” “Who did he pay to kill his own son?” “He didn’t tell me, he simply told me he had it fixed and that was it, I didn’t ask any more questions.” “Why did you people try to pin the rape and murder of Monica Uzondu on Jona Pam and his son?” “For Mr. Edem it was an opportunity to get back at Jona Pam for testifying against him during investigation into the police pension fund scandal.” “I want to know the truth about the video. I believe the video was initially made by Samuel but you people played a few tricks with it and made it look like Pam and his son were on that murder scene.” “We only changed two things; we removed the plate number of the SUV and superimposed the faces of Jona Pam and David Pam on my face and Edem Inyang’s face. Besides those two changes, every other thing in the video happened for real.”

“I had the video checked out by an editor and he told me it was real. How did you edit it?” “An India video editor did the job. He works for underground terror organizations in Pakistan, the Middle East and for hackers in China. The software he used is off grid; it was built for military intelligence, your normal ‘Final Cut’ or ‘Adobe Premier’ can’t detect the editing. Even though I knew it was fake, when I saw the final work, I believed it to be true. He used our facial expression and contours while carrying Monica out of the car and placed them on the faces of David and his father and made it look real.” “What I haven’t figured out is why you killed the police sketch artist and tried to kill me too. I was doing exactly what you wanted me to do and so was the sketch artist.” “We wanted you to think you were onto something big. The sketch artist was killed for the same reason. We paid him to give you the sketch you got from him and when you got it, we killed him. We didn’t want you to have doubts. It had to be real for you to believe it.”  “How many people did you kill to pull this off and how many people worked for you?”

“A lot of people worked for us. Obaseyi worked for us at the lab, he was the one who tried to destroy the DNA samples from the crime scene. Already I mentioned the video editor, but right now he could be in any part of the world. There are others whom Mr. Edem spoke directly with. As for those we killed, they are… okay let me count from Itoro. We killed Itoro, Samuel – the boy who witnessed and recorded the crime, Kingsley the sketch artist and of course many others who died in the bomb blast at the market place.” “Mr. Edem Inyang invited me to a meeting and gave me result of the DNA samples Itoro analyzed and the video he made, I now know the result must be fake, but what was the purpose of the meeting?” “To find out how much you really know and to hand you weapons to destroy Jona Pam and his son.” “The initial lab results were fake; how did you manage to get the samples you used for them?” “That was very easy, Jona Pam and his son like girls to a fault; we simply tossed girls at them and told them what to get for us and they did. They supplied us with their semen.”

“Thank you Ladi for cooperating with me, right now, you know the drill, I am taking you in with the record of the confessions you have made so far. I hope you already know the commissioner has ordered my arrest? Jona Pam thinks I have been hiding information about the investigation from him. I believed what you made me find, I thought he was the criminal.” Gbenga told the taxi driver where to take them after questioning Ladi, when he arrived at the zonal police station his colleagues were surprised to see Gbenga dragging Ladi out of the taxi with his hands cuffed. Mr. Jona ran out of his office when he heard that Gbenga was around and began to shout, “Gbenga what is this? I asked you to find those who killed Monica and you disappeared only to bring your colleague into the station cuffed. Gbenga you should be the one under arrest! Boys arrest Gbenga!”

“Sir you don’t know what I have done for you!” “What have you done for me Gbenga?” “Sir if not that a young man pointed me to the right direction by now sir, you have been in the cell answering for a crime you did not commit. I have evidence here that you and your son David raped and killed Monica Uzondu. I mean facial composites made from witness descriptions, DNA tests and samples, videos showing you and David removing Monica from the red SUV. If someone had not pointed me to where I found the true killers, I would have called the commissioner for your arrest sir.” “What are you talking about Gbenga? How could my son and I be killers of Monica Uzondu?” Gbenga laid out before Jona Pam and all the police officers present, all he had found out in the field which would have made a strong impression that Jona Pam and his son raped and killed Monica.

Jona Pam almost fainted when he saw the video, the composite sketches, DNA tests and forensic phenotyping results which all claimed that he and his son were the culprits. “Jesus! Who forged all this against me Gbenga?” Gbenga pointed at Ladi. “Ladi wetin I do you nah? Shebi you be my boy?”  “He didn’t act alone anyway; an enemy you made when you gave evidence in the police pension fund embezzlement scandal is the brain behind all this. I mean Mr. Edem Iyang.” “Edem Inyang!” “Yes, he and Ladi raped and murdered Monica Uzondu, I have a confession from Ladi about how the whole crime went down and all that has happened till this point.” “Thank you Gbenga. Let me call the commissioner of police to inform him about this.” Jona Pam dialed the commissioner of police and began to narrate breathlessly all he had seen and heard, “Dear sir, Gbenga has solved the crime. We have found those who raped and killed Monica Uzondu. They are our own Ladi Yusuf and former ASP, Edem Inyang. We have a confession from Ladi.”

“Have you made any arrests yet?” asked the commissioner. “We have only brought in Ladi sir.” “The arrest order against Gbenga is off! I want Edem and any other person involved in the crime brought in tonight. Do it now.” “Okay sir.” Gbenga informed Jona Pam that there were other persons to be arrested besides Edem. The persons were Obaseyi and some forensic physicians who worked at the police official lab. Two police squads were dispatched to bring in Obaseyi, some forensic physicians and Edem Iyang. Gbenga was with the team sent to arrest Edem Inyang; when they arrived at his house they found his wife and two children watching television in the living room. Gbenga asked after Mr. Edem and his wife informed him that he got a call and went to the garage. Gbenga and the policemen with him pulled their guns and rushed to the garage. Edem’s wife and children were shocked and followed behind them; when they entered the garage they saw Edem Inyang hanging from a hook on the ceiling. Someone had called him that Ladi had confessed to the crimes they committed and that the police were on the way to arrest him. He didn’t want another scandal after the police pension fund, so he went into his garage and took his life.       STORY CONTINUES...
