It was a rainy night in May 14th 2010, Monica was returning late from work. Her boss had made her work very late that night. She had planned to speed back home in her Camry to meet her fiancĂ© who had flown into town to spend the weekend with her. But sadly the heavy down pour had other plans, the road was flooded, so Monica had to drive at a snail speed. While she drove home her phone rang, it was him, the man who had helped her two months earlier when she had a flat tyre at Montgomery street. Monica searched her head to recall his name before picking up the call. Though they had spoken several times since that day, still she struggled to call him by his name. She wasn’t sure his name was Abel, but she took a chance on it.

“Hello Abel! I really am sorry I haven’t been able to return your calls. Well, how are you doing?” “I am fine. Thank God you remembered my name today. Haven’t you called me all sorts of names? I was expecting you to call me Nebuchadnezzar today,” Abel joked. The two of them laughed over his witty comment. “I am sorry about that Abel, but at least I am beginning to call you by your name”. “I am wondering if you are in the mood for a drink; I am at Sparks Bar right now.” “Good offer but bad timing Abel. I am trying to get home now and the rain just won’t let up. Maybe we can drink together by next week.” “Why not this weekend Monica?” “No way! My boo is in town. Really, I wish I could race home faster to be with him.” “Okay Monica, by next week I hope you won’t forget you have a drink on me.” “I won’t forget Nebuchadnezzar.” She meant that for a joke, and Abel understood and laughed over it.

After that call, Monica’s car began to overheat, the problem had begun after a commercial bus driver rammed into her car some weeks back. She checked the time on her wrist watch and dialed her mechanic, she wasn’t sure he would come out to help her seeing it was raining. She however called him, hoping for the best. As she had feared, her mechanic could not come out to help her. It was late and the downpour made it harder for him to leave his house. Monica was left with no other option than to call some of her male friends and colleagues at work. Most of them were indisposed at that late hour and the others bailed out on her, using the rain for an excuse. Then Monica remembered Abel, excitedly she dialed his number, she knew if there was one person who would come out to help her, it would be Abel. “Hello Abel! I think fate wants us to have that drink tonight. My car is messing up right now. Can you come over and help me please?” “How about your fiancĂ©, can’t he help you?” “I just found out he got called back to work three hours ago. Simply put, he is not in town anymore; so I am lonely like… Akon. Can you help me please? I am trying very hard to be strong, but the truth is I am afraid. The road is dark and lonely.”

“It is okay. Where are you now?” “I am on Emaus road, beside British park.” “Alright, I know the place, try to get your car off the road and stay inside. I will be there soon.” “Okay, I can do that.” Abel left his drink on the table and dashed out of the bar. He drove as fast as he could to get to British park; as he drew close he could see Monica’s car parked by the roadside, the headlamps were on. He pulled his car to the right side of the road and came out; in his hand were two bottles of drink, Blue Nun and Red Label. Monica was very pleased to see him; she opened her car and came out. “Thank God you are here! Abel you are an angel,” Monica said as Abel grinned broadly. “I can’t wait to get away from here. I think we should get in your car and leave. I will come back in the morning for my car,” Monica continued.  “Not so fast. Don’t forget I came with drinks…” “I will drink when you get me away from here”, Monica interjected. Monica picked her bag from her car and locked it; while Abel made a face and held up the drinks as Monica walked past him and entered his car. Abel joined her in the car and dropped the bottles of drinks on her laps. As he turned to start his car, his eyes fell on Monica’s alluring seductive thighs. Abel felt a surge of blood down his groin; he didn’t give it second thought. Like a slave of his desires, he quickly shut his car door; Monica didn’t see the change in the look of his face as she tried to put her seat belt on.

She suddenly let out a scream when she felt Abel’s hand shoving into her thighs, moving toward her abdomen and his tongue depravedly licking her cheek. She pushed him backward; but Abel wouldn’t stop, he was clearly beside himself. She removed her seat belt and tried to get out of the car. Abel charged back at her and pulled her back into the car. He tore off her shirt and jumped on her. He was too strong for Monica to deal with. She knew he was going to rape her if she did nothing; so she poked her fingers into his eyes and crossed her legs. Abel was undeterred; he landed a heavy punch on her thigh which left a paralyzing effect on the leg. Monica yelled in pain and Abel got back on top of her. Just then her eyes rested on the bottles of drink in the car, she grabbed one of them, the Red Label bottle, and smashed it on Abel’s head, he fell back, and she followed up the attack and plunged the broken bottle into his side and he sunk into the driver’s seat in a heap.

He didn’t move; Monica saw his head drop like he was dead. He bled from the head and from his rib side; overwhelmed with fear Monica opened the car door and ran outside screaming very loudly. She was covered in Abel’s blood and had only her brazier and skirt on as she ran by the road side yelling for help. A red Mercedes SUV pulled up in front of her and she ran towards it. About eighteen minutes later, Abel stirred and came out of his car; he had lost so much blood and felt light headed. It was as though he suddenly remembered the crime he was going to commit and felt remorseful for it, his eyes darted about and he called out to Monica. He couldn’t shout very loudly; Monica had left a deep wound in his left rib side. He spotted something on the ground a distance away, not so far into the bush. He wobbled toward it grimacing in pain. When he got closer, he recoiled in shock; the object on the ground was Monica’s body. Her neck had been slit, she looked badly beaten up and was stark naked. He could tell someone had forced her into sex and afterward murdered her.

In shock he hobbled toward his car, he couldn’t move fast, he was in pain. Just when he had reached his car, two highway patrol vehicles pulled up on the scene and policemen jumped out pointing there guns at him. Someone had seen the crime scene and called in the police. Abel shouted, “I didn’t do it! I didn’t do it! I swear I didn’t do it!” Two policemen shoved him to the ground and put cuffs on him. The others moved over to where Monica’s body lay and studied it. They called in a homicide squad who arrived soon after and did examination of the crime scene and took some photographs. They checked Monica’s car and it was securely locked; they opened Abel’s car and found blood all over the two front seats. Monica’s hand bag was lying on the floor of the car and her shirt which Abel had torn off was lying next to it. The police investigators checked the contents of the bag and found Monica’s ID card, her two mobile phones and her car key. With her car key, the policemen opened Monica’s car and found more proofs which convinced them that the owner of the car parked by the road, and the owner of bag found in Abel’s car was the lady lying dead in the brush near the road.

When they tried to start Monica’s car it wouldn’t start, so they concluded that the lady’s car must have parked up and she flagged down Abel for a lift before he attacked and killed her. But they quickly changed that theory when they took into consideration the position of Abel’s car. He drove into the scene; he wasn’t driving by and stopped for a lady who was in need of a lift. One of the detectives walked over to Abel and asked for his phone. Abel told him it was in his pocket, he took it and dialed the last number which called Abel and Monica’s phone rang. The policeman found out that Monica’s phone number was saved as ‘Lady Sexy’ in Abel’s phone, while Monica saved Abel’s phone number as ‘Tyre Fixer’. The policemen put Monica’s body in a bag and hauled Abel and Monica’s cars away with them.
