Nigeria's leading fictional story blog - industrial training, University of Port Harcourt, Canada for a pilot training program, phone rang.

“I don’t want this relationship anymore,” I told Onochie, he couldn’t believe what he was hearing, “What did I do wrong?”  He asked. “Nothing,” I replied. “I love you very much and I can’t live without you,” he begged. “My mind is already made up,” I told him. “Who is he?” Onochie asked. “Who is taking you away from me?” I wondered if I should tell him, but I didn’t know how he would react to it. “At least tell me who he is,” he insisted. “It’s…it’s James,” I finally said. “Which James? The one that works at the computer training center?” He was visibly shocked. “Oh my God! I took you there and got you registered for computer classes.” He could barely control his shock. “When did you meet him that you are choosing him over me?” He shot at me in utter consternation and shock. “Does it really matter?” I asked him rudely.

“I love him and that’s the only thing that matters right now,” I added emphatically. Onochie could hardly believe his ears. He pleaded with me one more time. “He doesn’t love you as much as I do,” he explained. “But I love him more than I have ever loved you. He is the one I want to be with.” I could see anger spread all over his face. He left, boiling on the inside. He sent his friends and relatives to plead with me in a last-ditch effort to salvage our relationship. Their pleas fell on deaf ears. My mind was made up – it was James or no one else.

“Good morning James,” I smiled as I greeted him the next morning at the cafĂ©. He hardly noticed me, yet I was dead serious that I could make him love me. “Good morning and how was your night?” He finally asked, somewhat out of courtesy. “It was good,” I replied. I was flashing my teeth as brightly as I could with my eyes gazing glaringly upon him. I admired his ‘drop-dead’ endearing ‘looks’. I could barely get him off my mind. After the day’s class, I went in search of him. As soon as he saw me approaching him, he pretended to be busy. Take all the time you want to do shakara, you will come begging me on your knees, I concluded within myself. Just like I had predicted, he began to warm towards me about a month later. “Where do you live?” I asked him one day when we were together. He looked surprised. “Would you like to visit me?” He replied. “If you don’t mind, I’d love to, or do you have a girlfriend you don’t want me to meet?” “No,” he quickly answered.

I could tell he was beginning to like me, but for some reason, he dragged his feet about asking me out. I doubled my efforts to lead him on. Of course, I took little time to visit him. To my greatest chagrin, this he lived in the slum – one of those dangerous places in Effurun called Alaka. Love, indeed is blind, because not even that would turn me off him. “Welcome to my house,” he announced upon my arrival. He introduced me to his family. I was eager to present myself as a good girl. I greeted them with bright, sparkly smiles and told them what a pleasure it was to finally meet them. It was a shoddy one room apartment. As soon as his family left us alone I was quick to ask him about what was on my mind. “How come you live in a place like this?” “Things have been pretty rough for my family and I. I lost my mum five years ago, not long after my dad lost his job. I had to drop out of school to help take care of my younger ones,” he explained.

I was moved by his story. The will to love him grew even stronger within me. I desperately wanted him to touch me but he wouldn’t budge. I made frantic, yet subtle efforts to steer him in that direction, but my efforts went unnoticed. I continued to visit him, and the pattern continued to play itself out – he would not touch me. So, I decided to face the situation head-on. “Why don’t you touch me? I asked him boldly one evening. “Nothing,” he replied. I took my chance. I moved close to him and kissed him. He didn’t resist my kiss but he did nothing more afterwards. I was getting frustrated. Suddenly his phone rang, but he didn’t pick it. Then his phone rang again, and this time he took the call.

He was clearly talking to a girl. He didn’t look comfortable at all. “Who was that?” I asked him as soon as he got off the phone. “Just a friend,” he replied and started kissing me. Just what I had wanted, so I forgot about the phone call. Soon, we were lovers but he still wouldn’t sleep with me. Clearly I was the one in love with him – the one who wanted a relationship and not him. One day we were together and he suddenly announced, “Let me use the rest room.” He went outside to check his phone. He was expecting a call or text from another girl he did not want me to know about.

Eventually, I found out he had a girlfriend. Her name was Happy; I guess Happiness in full. I confronted him about it, and he said he was sorry. I already had a girlfriend before I met you,” he explained. I was shattered. Happy was beginning to suspect also that he had another girl in his life, so he lied to her that I was his brother’s girlfriend. Well, I began to feel as Onochie did when I ditched him ruthlessly. There was no way I could go back to him, so I decided to forgive James. I had to make this work somehow, so that Onochie and his friends would not have the last laugh – besides, I was in love. After that confrontation, James began to jump into bed with me.

Shortly afterwards, I gained admission into a polytechnic. I was really excited and couldn’t wait to break the good news to James. He was happy for me. Soon, I was off to school for my first semester. While I was in school, I began to notice some changes in his attitude towards me. He took offence at me over little things. Also, he hardly called. I thought the distance was taking its toll on our relationship. As soon as the semester was over, I was eager to go be with my love. If only I knew what awaited me.

“I can’t continue with this relationship,” he announced to me when we caught up. “Happy is the one I love…the one I want to be with. I don’t want you to waste your time with me anymore,” he added. I was broken to pieces. We were in a public place yet I couldn’t stop the tears from flowing. It was no use begging him. I went back to school looking dejected. My friend didn’t like the way I was looking. She could tell I was a shadow of myself. She was very supportive, and soon a guy in my class was asking me out. I needed to forget James so I agreed to date him. I didn’t love him but I had a lot to benefit from him, so I jumped right in. His name was Friday.

Friday was loving and caring. He gave me whatever I asked of him. He had no idea he was just a rebound. I tried to forget about James but that seemed impossible. Soon second semester was over, so I returned home for the compulsory four months industrial training (IT). That was when I met Tunde. His parents had just been transferred to our church as the new pastors. The first time I set my eyes on him, it was instant attraction. I wanted him to be my boyfriend right away. You know what they say, be careful what you wish for because you just might get it. He was tall dark and handsome. He had just graduated from the University of Port Harcourt, and was serving (NYSC) at the time.

I had found a business center to attach myself to for the four months IT. I was sitting outside the business center one day when Tunde drove by. He looked in my direction and I waved; a gesture which I later regretted. Tunde took notice of me in church and approached me the next Sunday. “I hope you enjoyed the service?” He asked with a charming smile. “Yes I did,” I replied with exuberance. “The place I saw you the other day, is that where you work?” “Yes,” I replied. “Can I come and visit?” “That’s ok by me.” We became friends. We chatted and texted each other non-stop. Our friendship soon turned into a relationship. At this point, I had not heard anything from James. Soon the four months was over and I returned back to school. I pretended to Friday that all was well. The guy trusted me so he suspected nothing. I would lie to him and travel to be with Tunde. Anywhere he went, I was there. I skipped classes and missed tests - I didn’t care. I was having fun. I wasn’t the dull type, I guess, so it didn’t affect my grades. I was playing both guys without their knowing it.

My ND (National Diploma) program ended and I came home for my one year IT. I met with Tunde regularly. One day, I was naked in bed lying beside him. We were just recovering from a passionate session. That was when he dropped the bombshell. “My love I will be traveling to Canada for a pilot training program,” he said. “It has been my dream since childhood and my parents have decided to support me,” he added. I was devastated. He told me he wouldn’t forget me, and to my surprise he brought out an engagement ring. I was super-excited. “This is a symbol of my love and commitment to you,” he announced proudly. I gladly accepted it. While all these were happening, he had never introduced me to any of his family members. Each time I asked him about it he waved it aside. “Soon, I will introduce you to them,” he’d always say. It seemed he was only interested in the sex. That was the only thing we shared. He didn’t like to be seen with me in public. I was getting fed up, but somehow, I had stuck with him. The next month he traveled. He was to stay in Canada for two years.

“Joy!” I heard someone shout my name from across the street one afternoon. When I turned, it was James. I waited for him to come close. “What do you want?” I asked him.  “Don’t be mat at me,” he begged. “I am sorry for the way I treated you.” “So, how is your girlfriend?” I asked him. He wore a sad look on his face. “She left me immediately she gained admission,” he announced. Quite honestly, I was happy to hear that. I managed to say sorry to him – it was an empty sorry. “Can I see you again?” He asked. “What for? The last time I checked we were not even friends,” I shot back at him. I walked away, but seeing him again brought back feelings I had thought were dead. James didn’t give up, he came to my house with some of his friends to talk to me. There was a lady with them, she introduced herself as Sonia. One day I decided to pay him a surprise visit only to find him in bed with another lady. Immediately he saw me he started explaining. “I have told her to stop coming to visit me but she would not listen. I have already ended things with her.” “So, what is she doing here?” I asked him angrily.

“I honestly don’t know,” he replied. The person he was in bed with was the same Sonia who had accompanied him and his friends to my house. He stormed back inside and told Sonia his girlfriend was around. She wasn’t the type to let go easily. She destroyed anything she could lay her hands on. Blindly, I guess, I forgave him. I still loved him so I accepted him back, making it three men in my life at the same time. I was able to help James move from where he lived at the time to a better place. I bought him things and assisted him the best way I could. Of the three men in my life, I loved James the most. I was willing to do anything to make him happy.  Soon, James began to suspect I wasn’t faithful to him. At this point in time, he was madly in love with me. He had changed completely - I was the center of his world.

Tunde was due in Nigeria in a week’s time. We had already made plans for us to meet in Lagos. I was excited to see him again. As before, the sex continued between us. I talked regularly with Tunde on the phone. Friday wasn’t left out completely, and James was close by. I thought I had the life – you know, the big life; like I had it all. Soon Tunde began to suspect me; he had sent someone to watch me. When he had enough evidence that I was cheating, he called off the relationship. Friday had already heard about me and other men from some mutual friends I confided in. He was utterly disappointed and left me as well. James stumbled upon my chat with Tunde and how I had been sneaking off to see other guys. Well, he had forgiven me before after he caught me cheating. This time he was tired. He asked me to leave. I begged him to forgive me but he wouldn’t budge. Now I am alone - broke and jobless. I thought I was smart, but I ended up losing all. I guess I have learned my lesson; the hard way.
