Nigeria's Leading Fictional Story Blog: Boyfriend, Blackberry, Christmas, Relationship, Indian, African, Girlfriend, Parents, Apartment, Fitzroy Square in Central London

“I can’t even bear the thought of ending this, Everest,” Lydia said. She was lying beside him in bed at his apartment. “But it has to end. So far, there is no end in sight to your more than six-year relationship with your boyfriend. You claim you don’t love him anymore, yet you do nothing to end the relationship. He offered you a new Blackberry phone for Christmas, which you gladly accepted. Did you accept it on the basis that you will wake up tomorrow and end the relationship just like that? You are too idealistic my dear. You talk about love and how hard it can be and how willing you are to meander through the African rain forest for the sake of love, but you can’t even do the simplest of things. If you want to be with me, then end that relationship!!! You live with him for goodness sake! What do you take me for? The guy is much older so you have probably lost all affection for him, but he supplies all your financial and material needs. It is unfair. Let him go if you no longer love him. I am not going to be the guy you go to when you want to have a good time. It is love or nothing. You can leave my apartment now!!!”  Everest said angrily.

He made no attempt to hide his frustration. “Just like that? I should leave and that’s it?” “Yes, Lydia. I am through with you.” “Please honey, don’t do this to me. I am dead without you. I may lack the courage to do the right thing just yet, but I will eventually do it. Give me some more time. I need your support now. I have been with him for many years; I can’t just toss him out like that! Please darling, I need you like the air I breathe,” Lydia pleaded fervently with him. “I am afraid, you have to leave. It is over between us!” Everest was firm and stoic. Tears began to drizzle down Lydia’s face, but Everest maintained his stance. She got out of bed; put on her clothes and walked to the door. She held the door for a moment and looked back one more time at him. “You think I am weak, but I will prove you wrong. I will do it and you will see.” “I doubt it Lydia, but I’d be glad if you did it.” “I will see you soon,” she said as she opened the door. Just when Everest thought she was gone, she reopened the door and walked right back in.

She walked towards him and threw herself at him. She reached for his lips and began to kiss him. “Just one more kiss, honey,” she muttered as she frantically strove to land a kiss on his lips.” Casually at first, Everest responded. Then, he held her and kissed her passionately afterwards. “I am not leaving you,” she said as they let go of each other. “I will fight for this. My soul, my heart; the blood that runs in my veins and my breath; they all crave you with intense desire. I will fight for you, Everest. You are the love that I have been searching for.” “I will be waiting,” Everest said cautiously. When she left, he returned to bed, clutching his pillows as he wished she had not left. A whiff of her perfume hung in the air and on his pillow. He drew in a lungful of the perfume as he pressed the pillow closer to his face. His eyes closed as a pang of stabbing pain poked at him with ferocity. To get over missing her, he took a quick shower, got dressed and went to see his friend, Michael. He and Michael had known each other from Nigeria.

Later that night, Lydia called, but Everest would not take her call. He was itching to hear her voice, but his resolve to get her to end her current relationship was strong, so he ignored the call. “You have to end this, Everest. You cannot keep on like this. You two love each other intensely, but it is no use when she returns to another man every night.” Michael’s words echoed in his mind. He looked at his phone for a moment but he did not take the call. Lydia called repeatedly for seventeen times, yet he would not answer. He put his phone on silence mode to keep from looking at it each time she called. Just before he went to bed, he looked at his phone and a text from her read;

I am still up. I cannot sleep until I hear from you. Please call or text. My life has come to depend on you, Everest. I am brittle, please handle me with care. If you give me time, I will come through. I promise you that!

Everest turned off his phone without answering the text and went to bed. It had been more than a month since Lydia began to promise to leave her current relationship without acting on it. He no longer wanted to continue with her even though he loved her very much. He avoided her the following week at university. He barely went to the office, heading to the laboratory straight every morning to keep from running into her in the office. About two weeks later, he was working late in the lab and another of his colleagues, Shomaila, also an Indian girl was working late too.  Shomaila and Lydia were good friends and words were already flying around that Everest and Lydia were having a secret relationship.

“So, Everest, are you seeing Lydia?” Shomaila asked him. He was stunned. He was not expecting the question from her. “How do you mean?” He asked, somewhat rattled. “You know what I mean. The way a guy sees a girl. You are experienced enough to understand what I am driving at.” ‘Well…” “You know she has a boyfriend of over six years, right?” Shomaila added before he could answer. “Yes…I…I know that. We are not seeing each other really.” “Everyone in the department thinks so. You two have been sighted off campus together on several occasions, often holding hands…I hear kissing too.” “People talk, you know,” he replied. “I know…people talk a lot. Anyways, I didn’t think you’d be seeing someone who is with another guy. You know; she lives with him and they have been together forever. She will never leave him. She enjoys the material things she gets from him.” “I see,” he replied carefully. “You are way better than that. So, would like a drink or two with me later tonight? I’d be done in half an hour,” Shomaila offered. “Sure, why not?” Everest replied.

Lydia was standing in the cold outside waiting for Everest to leave the building. She wanted to talk to him privately. She had been dying to see him in two weeks. When he appeared, he was in the company of Shomaila and it was past 10:00PM. “Hey,” she said to them. “Hi Lydia,” they both replied. “Actually, I was wondering if I could have a word with you,” Lydia said referring to Everest. “Please give me a minute, Shomaila,” he said as he stepped aside with Lydia. “What are you doing with Shomaila this late?” She asked pensively as soon as they were at a safe distance from Shomaila. “Since when did I start explaining myself to you? You go back to your boyfriend and I hang out with whom I want.” “But she is my best friend…or she was…no more after this. I know her. She wants you. She once told me that she liked you.” “Well, you have no say in this Lydia. You should be home with your man.” “But I really love you Everest. Please don’t do this. I beg of you. I will end my relationship with my boyfriend tonight,” she pleaded with him. “I have to leave now Lydia. It would be rude to keep Shomaila waiting for too long.” “I can leave, Everest if you guys are going to be long,” Shomaila offered. “No, wait. I will be right with you,” Everest replied. “Why don’t you tell her to leave?” Lydia asked with a hint of frustration. “None of your business,” said Everest.

“Please honey, don’t do this. Where are you taking her? To your apartment?” “I can’t answer that. Where does your boyfriend take you?” “So she is your girlfriend now? So soon?” “I am off Lydia. See you sometime.” She stood there in the cold of the winter as he walked away. Tears dropped down her face as she watched helplessly. “Will I see you tomorrow, Everest?” She asked as Everest and Shomaila disappeared into the distance. He did not answer her. “What is the problem?” Shomaila asked him. “None. Everything is fine.” “Sure? It looked like she was mad to see me with you.” “She has a boyfriend, doesn’t she?” Everest asked. “Yes she does, but I know she fancies you.” “Well, in life, you can’t eat your cake and have it back,” he said placing a hand on her shoulder. Shomaila smiled quietly as they walked to the pub nearby.

“Is this for real or are you just playing Lydia and I?” Shomaila asked him in the morning. She had spent the night with him. “I want this to be for real,” he answered. “Me too. Are you serious? I thought I could never have you. Everyone said you were with Lydia. So, you don’t mind that I am Indian?” “Do you mind that I am African?” “No.” “Really? I am sure your parents would ask you what you are doing with an African, won’t they?” “They will, but I am very independent, and they have come to respect that.” “We’ll see.”

A short while later Everest walked Shomaila to the bus stop. Her apartment was a short distance away, but in the biting winter cold, she was better off taking a bus. “What do you think you are doing?” Soon, she hopped off the bus and walked merrily towards her apartment around Fitzroy Square in Central London. Her face beamed with a bright smile. Then, she heard Lydia’s angry voice yelling at her. She had been waiting for her all morning, walking around the square waiting for her to show up after she had knocked repeatedly at her door. “You are coming from his apartment, right?” Lydia said with burning rage. “I can’t tell you where I am coming from,” Shomaila replied with a frown on her face. “You know I love him. Why are you doing this?” “I told you first that I had a crush on him and you went behind my back to seduce him. You are evil. You have a boyfriend, so go back to him. If you stand in my way, I will smack you down right now. Besides, I think it is time I tell your boyfriend what you have been up to,” Shomaila threatened. She was a no-nonsense girl, and Lydia knew it. “I can’t believe you are doing this,” Lydia lamented. “I couldn’t believe you did what you did, Lydia. You are terrible. You are a backstabber. I will tell your boyfriend what you have been up to. I was the first to mention that I liked him and you quickly jumped into his bed. Well, you cannot occupy two houses at the same time; or can you? Everest is mine and there is nothing you can do about it, period!!!” Shomaila said emphatically.
