I was not one to believe in law of Karma until I received a sucker punch that sent me swirling in the air before crashing down to mother earth like a bag of Dangote cement. It was mid-1990s and five of us shared a four bedroom flat in Akoka, Lagos. Jide and Okon were in one room, while each of myself, Akujiobi and Kenneth had a room to ourselves. Akujiobi, Okon and I were classmates at University of Jos. We met the rest of the gang at Law School in Lagos. We strategically settled for a flat in Akoka – it ensured a steady supply of beautiful female students from nearby University of Lagos. Our flat was like a revolving door. Girls arrived and disappeared like smoke in the air. We were all hustling young lawyers, but we made sure to furnish the living room to a high taste. Most girls lost their breath on entering our exquisite flat. Often, it would be their only appearance in our theater of dreams or shall I say theater of nightmares for the female folks. Soon, Akujiobi met Funmi. Funmi was not beautiful – she was stunning. Her curves would literally leave you speechless. Her full lips were sumptuously welcoming and her bold eyes sent tremors through your heart, and her dark glossy skin was scintillating.

All the guys in the flat had a crush on Funmi, but no one would dare make a move on a friend’s girlfriend – except me. Akujiobi was head over heels in love with Funmi. She literally lived in our flat, barely sleeping on campus. I could not take my eyes off her. She would be talking to me in the living room and I would not hear a word of what she was saying. My eyes, ears and heart would be firmly fixated on her beauty. Once I was imagining what it would feel like to lie next to her in bed, while she was telling me a story. “If that happened to you Chidiebere, what would you do?” She asked me. I was busy moping at her, lost in a fantasy world built on foundation of lust. “So, you have not been listening to me right?” “What?” I asked. I sat there moping at her like a sheep. Each time she headed to bed at night with Akujiobi, my lustful eyes would shoot a thousand bullets into Akujiobi’s back. I desperately wanted to be in his place. I had an off-and-on girlfriend at the time. I stopped taking her calls. Just like that, I stopped talking to her. I called off our relationship without even telling her it was over.

My whole heart had been consumed by this intense desire to get my hands on Funmi. I dreamt of her every night. I wished Akujiobi death on several times and on a few occasions allowed the thought of taking his life play on my mind, but I could not quite go through with it. Every little opportunity I had, I made sure to hang around Funmi. When she laughed, I could feel my heart roar and quake violently like the erupting Mount Vesuvius, churning out, boiling magma with unquenchable rage. Watching her full succulent lips open and close sent waves through my whole body. About this time, I bought a car, a Toyota Camry. I was the only amongst us friends that owned a car at this time. In the morning, the guys would squeeze into my car and I would drop everyone off at their law firm. I happened to be working for one of the biggest law firms in town. I had just brought in one of the biggest clients, hence my ability to buy a car.

One day, an idea struck me. I had to have Funmi somehow. I began to lay an emotional siege for her. She appeared to love Akujiobi greatly, but I was willing to push her resistance thin. I began my onslaught by first offering her money. At first, I would toss five thousand Naira at her when no one was looking.  Soon, it was ten thousand Naira. I bought her gifts of jewelry and clothes which I secretly passed on to her. She never rejected my offers. One night Akujiobi was out of town so I went to visit Funmi on campus. I did all I could that night to get in the sac with her, but she refused. I was encouraged nonetheless. I was able to touch her to a great extent. I did not sleep a wink that night. My heart was beating non-stop as I imagined and re-imagined what it felt like to brush my lips against her tightly closed mouth. Her fragrance was ‘heavenly’. It teased my senses with relentless allure.

After that I began to touch her indecently when no one was looking. At first, she told me to stop it, but I persisted. I made sure to backup my touches with gifts. One evening, I offered her twenty thousand Naira. Back in the day, this was a huge chunk of money for a student. She was shocked. One step at a time, I chipped away at her defenses. Simultaneously, Akujiobi was having a hard time financially. I capitalized on this. I would pick Funmi up from campus and take her to expensive restaurants. She picked out whatever she wanted from exotic boutiques in town and I paid for them. I had a flat lined up to move into. One morning, she was in the flat when I left for work with the guys. An hour into work, I told my boss that I was not feeling well, which was true in a sense because I could not get Funmi off my mind. When I saw her that morning, she was still in her sleeping gown, which highlighted her curves with a fair degree of boldness.

I was allowed to go home. I drove as though I was being chased by demons from Ikeja back to Akoka. Thankfully, she was still in the flat when I got home. She seemed somewhat surprised to see me, but I was convinced she knew I had planned it. It was a perfect time to be with her alone. I pushed like a wounded lion, applying every pressure I could and soon, Funmi capitulated. Indeed, it was a magical experience. I held her to myself afterwards. I did not want to let her out of my sight. Each time she touched me, I let out a pleasure-infested moan. “So what now?” she asked. “This will remain our secret. No one must know about it. I will be moving to my own flat soon. You could end your relationship with Akujiobi and date me afterwards,” I answered, painstakingly planting the seed in her mind and it worked. Akujiobi’s hard times did not seem to be in a hurry to end and Funmi had grown used to my gifts. She made up excuses and ended her relationship with Akujiobi. Before this though, rumors had been flying around that she and I were at it. Neighbors told Akujiobi that I was in the habit of returning to the flat after we had all left for work to be with Funmi. After the first time, I could not stop and she seemed willing to continue the trend. We had great times. Somehow, I had no remorse whatsoever. Our friends warned me that if what they heard was true, they would never forgive me.

I turned deaf ears on everyone, denying any accusations leveled against me. Not long after Funmi broke up with Akujiobi, it was obvious that she and I were dating. Words spread fast. Akujiobi was furious. He cut all ties with me and so did the rest of the gang. Although I missed them, having known them for quite some time, I took comfort in every minute I spent with Funmi. I spoiled her big time. She was intoxicating. I could not seem to get enough of her. A year later, I relocated to the USA. It was a bittersweet experience for me. I was excited at the opportunity to practice law in the US, yet I was shattered to pieces at the prospect of leaving Funmi behind. “I will marry you, Funmi,” I assured her. I pleaded with her to wait for me. I worked tirelessly to send her money. It took some years, but I finally had my way. I got my license to practice law in the US and soon, I had my Green Card. Life was good. I returned home and married Funmi. She had to wait a while before she could join me in the US though, but visited quite often in between.
