It is amazing, how memories shape time. They are the strings by which we are connected to the past…the platforms from which we can imagine what the future may hold. Like mini voices, they speak quietly to us in colors and shades that we alone fully understand. Some things we want to hold onto for life; beautiful memories that characterize an important phase in our lives. We wish we could freeze and frame them…we want to carry them with us and relive them each day. That is what pictures – images do. They take us back in time…to that single moment that defines something so strong, so meaningful to our time here. They are so quiescent, yet so loud in the most elegant of manners. In this article, we share with you, another breathtaking collection of incisive pictures by the award-winning photographer, Andreja Novak. Late last year, we presented to you, the first series of pictures by Andreja. This article showcases superb shots by Andreja from India to Indonesia and from New York City to Oman….

Undulations: Location – India; Mist-capped undulating mountains playing host to lush-green plants and gyrating trees against a backdrop of somber skies reflecting shades of dull colors. The start of a new day waiting to burst with colors as the mist drifts past. A hierarchy of mountains, each clamoring for recognition by peaks below them.

One happy family: Location – Myanmar; The unit that defines society – family. Puffing a spurt of smoke under the watchful eyes of our four-legged best friends. Wrapped in carefully woven fabric to keep out cold, mother clings tenaciously to her young who smiles ebulliently at the prospect of another beautiful day. Anchored to a dirt road with gullies and steeps, they stand firm as one…as though they were making a bold statement, “This is us. This is our home. We are one happy family!!!” The splendid deep smile on the face of the little one embodies nothing but HAPPINESS.

A whole new world: Location – Corsica; With razor-sharp energy and radiant color, the sun breaks free from the clutch of the night, shoving aside, the murky dullness of the dark. Rambunctiously, it bounces off the hill and the water with bright-eyed excitement. Like a dark horse emerging from obscurity and declaring its value and worth, the water below reflects the ebullience of the sun as the hill comes into view like a giant held back by the gloominess of the night. Short shadowy trees manage to sneak into the view, standing boldly like a hulk, taking cue from the sun’s fire and zest for life. They all declare the coming of a new day…it is a whole new world!

Contrasting worlds: Location - Oman; Baking-hot desert sand ‘doused’ by the breath of pristine blue ocean waters. Cascading waves crashing fiercely on the beach as though they want to catch a glimpse of beach lovers that come on foot and by means of vehicles. Side by side, they arrive at the beach, drawn by the rhythms of the waves, eager to feel the coolness of salty water spraying at them as waves die down upon crashing into the beach. A boundless vista hangs of the blue waters, gazing upon hot desert sand.

Home sweet home: Location – Indonesia; Deluged by raindrops that feistily drop from above, hemmed in by a heavy downpour; home is safe. Home; the corner of earth that wraps its arms around them and envelopes them warmly, no matter the weather. A mini flood circles around them, but home stands firm like a rock, shielding them relentlessly. Even their clothes are sheltered from the elements. “Pour all you can, I will safely munch on my meal from the safety of home,” her eyes seem to say. And the little one glows elegantly, from the safety of home as the rain pounds the robust roof. The photographer had little mercy from the rain though – soaking wet!

The city that never sleeps: Location – New York City; The big apple from above. A scenic mesh of skyscrapers dazzling in the sun, glowing with typical New York pride. High up, each structure is making a case for recognition. They play host to millions who seem to be nowhere in sight. Layer upon layer, each one climbs; rubbing shoulders with its neighbors. Cynosures. Regular buildings are dwarfed out of sight, cradling the base of each mammoth giant like children circling around their mother’s legs.

Pictures were taken by Andreja Novak while captions and descriptions were put together by Victor Chinoo and Andreja Novak.
