It was Wednesday and Maureen had yet to attend class all week. She was holed up in her room, clutching her pillows for emotional support. If she collected her tears, she would have a bucket full. “I am afraid, I am not going to talk to you about this again,” Foluke said. “I have made my point clear. Why would you cry over an idiot – a guy who sleeps with multiple girls? How can he love you and be in bed with other girls at the same time? Wake up girl!!!” “I know you are right, Foluke, but it still hurts. It is not that I am still in love with him, but it is more about the fact that he took me for a fool.” “But you did not fall for it. You figured out what he was upto early enough. You should be thankful to God that you did not end up being one of his many accomplishments – the girls he has slept with. Get out of bed and go to class. If you continue like this, you will fail because of a guy who is not worth it.” “Has he come around since he checked on me last Monday?” Maureen asked. “Yes, several times, and I told him to leave,” Foluke replied.  “I hope you don’t want to see this guy?” “No, I just wanted to find out if he had been around after the first visit.”

“Man, I have lost her,” Donald explained to Siji. “I knew Wendy was behind this all along. Chinwe told me that Wendy had been hiding in the hedges near my hostel while they were banging on my door. And Maureen saw me kissing Enem. She heard me say stupid things. I have no chance of getting her.” ‘From everything you said, I would suggest you forget her. Maybe it is time you found a serious relationship and stopped jumping around.” “I thought I was going to do that with Maureen, but now that I have missed that opportunity, I wonder if I will ever fall in love with any other girl.” “Don’t even kid me on this. You will soon be dying for another girl,” said Siji with a smile. They sighted Maureen walking into the building. “There she is. Men, that girl is hot!!!” “I agree with you, but if you had not been too greedy, you’d have her now. It is time to forget this one, Donald,” Siji advised him.

“I am sorry Maureen. I am not asking you to be my girlfriend anymore. I am simply asking you to forgive me. I was stupid, deceptive and downright evil. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.  I deserve nothing from you,” Donald said to her after class. She looked at him for moment and then said, “Please stay away from me. I never want to have anything to do with you.” “I will never bother you again, but I hope someday, you will forgive me. I am very sorry.” She turned and walked away without uttering another word. A mixture of anger and disappointment ripped through her as she walked towards her hostel. “It will take some time before I get over him,” she said to Foluke later in the evening. “Are you saying that you still have feelings for him?” She asked. “I think it is a mixture of hate and like…frustration and betrayal. I am not sure it is possible to hate and like someone at the same time, but I have to admit that a part of me hates him passionately, while another part of me is fully over him.” “No matter what you do, stay away from him. He is not good for you,” Foluke advised. When Foluke returned to her room, she dialed Wendy. “Hi Wendy, I just want you to know that Maureen is not fully over him. She hates him for sure, but a part of her still wants him from what I can see. I cannot stand that guy. No matter what happens, she cannot date him. He will break her heart. I need you to do whatever you can to make sure that the two of them don’t date each other,” Foluke explained over the phone.

“That guy is so charismatic and intelligent. Once a girl is hooked to him, it takes a while to fully get over him. Don’t worry, I will not leave to see Donald break another heart after he broke mine,” Wendy promised. “I count on you. I really need to protect my friend.” “I will do my best,” Wendy reiterated.  The next Saturday, Wendy dressed in a mini skirt and tight blouse and went over to Donald’s room. Boys whistled across campus as she walked flamboyantly to Donald’s hostel. He was shocked to see her at his door. “What are you doing here? Have you come to see if you succeeded in killing me emotionally?” “Chinwe told you that I had asked them to hang around because I knew Enem had walked into your room?” Wendy asked. “Yes she did. I wonder why I allowed myself to be seduced by Enem?” He did not know that Enem and Wendy were working together all along. “I am very sorry Donny. I am so sorry. Please forgive me. I was so mad at you that I wanted to hurt you, but I have been feeling guilty ever since,” Wendy said. Her eyes were brimming with tears. She was giving Donald a taste of his own medicine – sweet talk.

“Please forgive me. I don’t want to trouble you anymore. If I have to I can talk to Maureen. I am very sorry Donny,” she pleaded. Donald opened the door and Wendy walked into his room with him. “You don’t have to cry. It is okay.” ‘I am ashamed of myself. I don’t know why I did that…It is…it is just that I…I love you so much Donny.” She meticulously allowed her blouse to reveal her belly. Donald passed her some tissue to wipe her eyes. She took the tissue stood up and hugged him. “Just tell me you have forgiven me Donny!” “Yes, I have. It is okay now Wendy.” Soon, their hands were wondering. One thing led to another and yet again, Donald failed the test. A while later Wendy went to the fridge and returned to bed with a glass of orange juice for Donald and another for herself. Shortly after drinking the glass of orange juice, Donald passed out. He descended into a deep slumber. “Look at you, handsome and strong Donald. I have given you something that put you to sleep. I have complete control of you now and you cannot help yourself. From now on, you will do what I say,” she said out loud as though Donald could hear her. She took her iPhone 6 and began to take naked shots of Donald. She also took compromising shots of herself and Donald. She flipped through her phone to make sure she had taken enough shots. Satisfied, she got dressed and left, leaving Donald in bed.  “Your weakness is women Donald and I will use that against you for as long as I care. You broke my heart to shreds, so I am not going to sit and watch you do the same to other girls. It is you and I in this university,” she said just before she left.

There was a knock on Maureen’s door. When she opened the door, Siji was standing at her door. “Siji, what brings you here?” “I wanted to stop by to say hi.” “Well, that is quite a surprising.” “Yes, you are right. Anyways, I only wanted to say hi.” “You can come in, unless you don’t want to,” Maureen urged him. He walked in and took a seat by the window. Her room was overlooking the love garden on campus. The trees were shedding their leaves in preparation for harmattan. The crispy smell of dust in the air spoke volumes about the coming dry, harmattan breeze. “I know you and Donald are friends…yes we talk every now and again, but I was not expecting you at all. Did Donald ask you to talk to me?” “No. I came on my own. I am sorry about what happened. I have told Donald to stop that lifestyle, you know. I wanted to let you know that I feel sorry that you had to go through that. You certainly don’t deserve it.” “Are you saying that you are not like your friend?” “I am way different from Donald in that area. He is a nice guy, but when it comes to women, I don’t agree with him at all. He will tell you that, if you ask him. I think a woman should be adored and respected, not cheated on.” “It is good to hear that from another guy.” “Well, not all guys are like Donald. That is one of the reasons I hate his attitude to women. He makes all men look bad! And we all are not that bad after all.”

“It will take me quite a lot to believe that, Siji.” “I understand. I don’t expect you to believe that now, but hopefully someday, you will be able to banish the memories of Donald from your mind.” ‘I certainly hope so. So, who is he sleeping with this weekend?” Maureen asked scornfully. “You’d have to ask him,” Siji replied with a smile. “So, are you doing alright after the whole experience?” He asked her. “I am doing alright Siji. Thanks for asking.” “I am glad to hear that. If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know.” “Thanks, I will keep that in mind. Shortly after Siji had left Foluke entered Maureen’s room. “I saw Donald’s friend leave your room. What did he come here for? Did he end him to come and beg you?” Foluke threw a barrage of questions at Maureen. “Relax Foluke. You worry a bit too much. Even if he did, I am not thinking about jumping at Donald. I appreciate that you look out for me a lot, but I am a big girl you know,” Maureen pointed out. “I don’t quite agree with you, Foluke thought. “I am sorry if I come across as too protective. I just don’t like to see women being taken advantage of.” “By the way, how is your relationship with Ifeanyi?” Maureen asked. Maureen asked. “Great! He is such a darling. I love him to bits and he loves me just as much if not more,” Foluke answered. “I am happy for you two.” “Thank you Mau-Mau!”

Donald woke up to a headache. He looked at the time and it said 9:00. He thought it was 9PM. He thought back to what he had been doing before he fell asleep. Then he remembered Wendy. She was nowhere to be found. He got up and looked through the window. It was daylight. From the look of things, it was morning. He had slept through the entire previous day and into the early hours of Sunday. I wonder why I slept that long, he thought. His phone beeped and he picked it up. It was a text message. He did not know the phone number. His heart sank into his mouth the moment he saw the content of the text – numerous compromising pictures of himself with no clothes on. ‘And there is more,’ the text said at the bottom after the pictures. His heart began to beat fast…Wendy is out to ruin me, he thought.
