He heard a knock on the door. He sprang to his feet and dashed to the door. “Hello Donny,” Enem said with a bright smile. She was dressed in a red gown that hung just above her knees. Her long legs revealed themselves boldly, glaring ostentatiously at Donald. “Enem, how are you?” “I am fine Donny. I wanted to stop over to see how you are doing.” “That is kind of you. Come right in.” Enem walked in and took the seat opposite Donald who sat on the bed. “What can I offer you?” Donald asked. “Nothing. All I need is you my dear Donny,” Enem answered in a sexy tone. She left the seat and walked over to him. Putting her arm around his neck, she pulled him close to himself and Donald gave in completely. Soon, they were both intertwined with each other. Clothes went flying to the ground afterwards. In the end, Enem had a broad smile on her face. “What is going on Donny? What are you doing with Maureen?” “You know I am not serious about her. She sort of fancies me, and I am playing along with that,” Donald lied. “But when you are with her, you ignore me? You know I love you so much. Why would you treat me like that?”
There was a knock on the door before Donald could make up another lie. He listened carefully and so did Enem. “Are you expecting another person…maybe Maureen?” She asked him. “No. Come on Enii baby. I am not serious with her you know,” he lied yet again. They both spoke in a low tone. There was another knock on his door. This time, it was much louder. “Whoever it is, they are keen on seeing you this afternoon, but I am just as keen to have you all to myself,” Enem whispered into his ear. Donald’s heart was beating like the talking drum. He knew Enem had said something, but he had no clue what she had said. The sound of his pounding heart was far too loud that it drowned out Enem’s whisper. There was yet another knock. Enem wrapped herself around Donald, eager to make sure that whoever it was would not sway his attention away from her. “Are you looking for Donald?” A male voice asked the ‘knocker’. It was Donald’s next door neighbor who had come out of his room to find out who was about to break down Donald’s door.
“Yes I am. Would you happen to know where he might be?” Maureen asked. “I am not sure he is at home,” Answered Ibezim, Donald’s neighbor who had seen Enem arrive at Donald’s door. Donald wanted to jump out of bed and open the door. He had been hoping that Maureen would have a change of heart and listen to him. Now she has and she is lying in bed with Enem with both of them wrapped up in their birthday suit. “That is Maureen’s voice, isn’t it?” Enem asked “I don’t know,” Donald answered pretending he had not picked up Maureen’s voice. His voice was beating faster. A wave of frustration swept through him. He wanted to turn the hands of time so he could go back to moments earlier when he was alone in his room…and then Maureen knocked. “Thank you, I will wait around for him then,” Maureen replied. “Do you want to wait in my room?” Ibezim offered. He was hoping that she would accept the offer to make way for Donald to ship out Enem through the hallway without being seen by Maureen. “No thanks, I will just wait at the entrance,” said Maureen. “Are you sure? You can sit in my room. I will leave the room to you. I don’t mind,” Ibezim pressed harder. “Thank you. I will be conformable over there,” Maureen insisted. She walked to the east end of the hallway and say on the step. From there, she could see the entire hallway all the way to Donald’s door. She lifted her phone off her purse and dialed Donald’s number one more time. He phone had been on vibration, so he barely heard it. It was tucked away in the pocket of his jean trousers that lay forlornly on bare ground in his room.
“That is Maureen Donny. I did not realize she knew your room. So, are you serious about her?” “Enii baby, I told you there is nothing between us. I have no idea how she figured out where I stay. I never brought her here,” Donald fabricated another lie. “Are you sure?” “Yes Enem.” “Okay honey. I trust you,” Enem said gullibly, planting a peck on Donald’s cheek. “These girls, they won’t let you be. They follow you around the entire campus. You are all mine, Donny, isn’t it?” “Yes, Enii baby. Yes, you are right.” “I have to go now Donny,” Enem announced to Donald who was still kicking himself for missing Maureen. He wanted Enem to leave, but he was worried that Maureen might still be out in the hallway. “Why do you want to leave now? Stay with me honey,” he persuaded her…albeit out of his own agenda. “You really want me to stay?” “Yes Enii. I always want you to stay.” “You don’t care that Maureen might be lurking out there waiting for you?” “Is it Maureen out there? Well, that does not matter. What matters is that you are here with me right now.” “It is very sweet of you to say that honey.” Donald wanted to cry. Everything in him wanted to leap out of the room so he could see Maureen.
Maureen tried Donald’s number again and it rang without being answered. She peered at her watch. It was getting to 7:30PM. Foluke would not approve of her if she found out that she had gone looking for Donald. She got to her feet and walked towards Donald’s door one more time. As she neared the door, she sighted Chinwe walking towards her. Soon, the two of them converged near Donald’s door. “Hi Maureen,” Chinwe said scanning Maureen’s face. “Hello Chinwe,” she answered awkwardly. As if she owned the door, Chinwe rammed on Donald’s door like a carpenter driving a nail into hard wood. “Are you here to see Donald as well?” Chinwe asked. “I was passing by, so I decided to stop by to say hello to him,” Maureen answered politely. She wanted the ground to open and swallow her. She felt dryness in her throat as she spoke. Chinwe on the other hand looked gung-ho. “It seems you like Donald,” Chinwe asked boldly. “How do you mean?” “The way a girl likes a guy…like falling in love with a guy,” Chinwe replied caustically. She was chewing and blowing gum like a frenzied athlete about to embark on a 100 meter dash.
“Oh, no we are just friends.” “I see. Actually, I like him and he and I are together, sort of, if you know what I mean?” Chinwe said rather ebulliently, having sensed Maureen’s modesty. “I see,” Maureen said. I knew it, she thought painfully to herself. “I could not say that to you last time when he said to my face that he liked you. You know, I had to be polite and discrete…kind of.” “I see,” Maureen answered again, not sure what to say. She sounded somber and more confused by now. “What did I hear Donald? I can hear Chinwe’s voice out there. She is discussing with Maureen. She claims she is seeing you. Is that true?” Enem harassed Donald in a hushed whisper. “Don’t mind Chinwe. She says that to everyone just to create the impression she is my girlfriend.” “Really?” “Yes. You know her. She is very loud…too talkative. She would say anything to look like my girl.”
“Actually, Donald told me that you are just a friend,” Maureen managed to reply. “He did?” “Yes.” “Interestingly, he said the same about you.” “So, do you love him?” Maureen asked. “I do actually.” “Do you think he loves you?” “I know he cares about me. Yes, I believe he loves me.” “Then, why would he call you a friend and not his girlfriend?” “I don’t really believe he called me that. When he is with me, he is totally into me. I know it.” “But he said to your face that I was the one he was dying for.” “Do you believe that?” Chinwe asked. “I don’t. Maybe he thinks he is, but I doubt that he does.” “Are you in love with him? Do you feel anything for him?” “I don’t. I really don’t,” Maureen lied. “So you just came over to say hi to him at this time?” “Yes.” “Well, he is not home obviously given how many times I have knocked loudly on his door. You see, I am willing to camp outside his door until he gets home. I am sure you would not want to do that Maureen. You are too modest for that.” “It is not about modesty. I have no reason to wait that long.” “That is the difference between you and I. I am willing to wait. When I want something, I go all out for it.” “I do the same too, Chinwe, but only when I am sure that what I am going for is worth the effort and time.” Donald heard that. He wanted to disappear from his situation. Enem listened intently, pressing her ear against the wall. “Donny, are you sure you have not…you have not done anything with Chinwe?” Enem asked with a frown on her face. “Come on honey. You know I care so much about you.” “Then let’s open the door and tell the two of them that I am the one in your heart…in your life.” As if on cue, Chinwe knocked loudly on the door again; this time with ‘intense ferocity’.
