“What is this?” Donald asked tossing the letter at Wendy?” “What is that?” She asked. “You tell me.” “Well, you have the paper; tell me what this is all about.” “Read the letter Wendy. Stop pretending that you don’t know what this is all about?” Wendy looked at the paper for a moment and looked up at him. “I have no idea what this means, Donald.” “Yes you do.” “No I don’t.” “You wrote this letter and sent it through a conduit to Maureen. You did not have to do this. It is over between us. Why would you want to ruin what I have with Maureen?” “I don’t know what you are talking about. I don’t have the time for you Donald.” “You are a liar. I know you Wendy. Enem and Chinwe are not this ruthless. They talk too much but they can’t do anything. As for you, I know you have a heart that is made of stone.” “And yours is made of wool?” “Just stay away from Maureen and I. You should mind your own business.” “I am minding my own business. You were the one that came to my apartment to bother me with a letter that I know nothing about.” “I am leaving now. Let this be the end of this nonsense from you.” Donald turned and walked out.

The Next Day
“I don’t want to talk to you Donald. I knew you were sleeping with those girls. I said. Please leave me alone,” Maureen said matter-of-factly. “You have to hear me out Mau-mau. This is all a lie. Someone is trying to mess what you and I could have. I love you so much. Please don’t end our relationship like this,” Donald pleaded. “Relationship? There was never any. Look at the letter that was waiting for me when I got home yesterday. The writer says she has been sleeping with you. Why would I want to have anything to do with you afterwards? I have a lot of self-respect, Donald. I don’t want to associate with you whatsoever. Stay away from me.” Maureen walked away, tossing the letter at him.

“I wonder what is going on between Donny and Maureen. I have not seen them together since yesterday. This morning, I saw them talking, but Maureen looked very angry. She was animated. I sense that things are not working out between them,” Enem pointed out. “I guess that makes you very happy,” said Ifebuche. “You should not gloat over the misfortune of others, Enem. Simply because you want Donald even though you know he does not want you, you are busy celebrating the fact that he might be having a problem with the girl that he truly wants,” Antonia added. “I know Donald well enough. He does not love her. He loves me,” Enem insisted. “Yes, you know him well enough. Just a few months into the semester and spending a few minutes in his bed is enough to know what he, a man is thinking. Wake up girl. You don’t know the guy.” “What makes you think I have slept with him?” Enem fired at Antonia. “It is written all over your face my friend. I have seen you walking happily home with him after school to his apartment. Yes, you two went to his apartment to study,” Gloria said with a hint of sarcasm.  “I guess he was teaching you Biology…maybe Legal Biology since you are studying Law,” Antonia stoked the fire.

“You are all jealous. The guy likes me and you don’t want to accept the truth.” “No, you are the one rejecting the truth Enem. The guy liked you for a few minutes in the sac, and that is all. Will you swear by the Bible that you did not sleep with him? And Chinwe too? We are all girls, there is no point lying to us,” Ifebuche stressed. “I am not going to sit here and listen to all this. I don’t have to swear to you or anyone. I know myself.” “Sorry Enem. He is not coming back to you, even if Maureen says no to him.” “You watch and see,” Enem replied as she walked away. “I can’t believe this. Why can’t they see the truth?” “The truth is hard to believe after the guy had made them promises of love only to dump them and jump onto the next train,” Gloria explained “I guess so. But they can simply forget him and carry on. It is becoming really stupid of them to chase him around and watch what he does with Maureen,” said Antonia. “It is called obsession my dear – the guy is stunningly handsome and he oozes confidence. I wonder what happened behind closed doors which has left them attached to him,” Gloria said. “Wendy seems to have let go though,” added Ifebuche. “She has left him to do as he wishes, keeping to herself.” “I went to the same secondary school with Wendy. If Donald actually slept with her, he is in for trouble. She won’t let go like that. She is a different breed. If I were Donald, I’d be very concerned,” Gloria explained.

“I don’t know what to do Siji,” said Donald. “Maureen keeps getting these anonymous letters telling her all kinds of stuff about me. She won’t talk to me. I love that girl very much.” “It is often the case with life you know. The ones you want often elude you but the ones you don’t want breathe down your throat. Wendy, Chinwe and Enem would do anything to have you, but you have left them in the dark as if they never existed, chasing Maureen like gold.” “Men, that girl is pure gold.” “So were the other girls until you jumped into bed with them.” “This one is different. Believe me, Maureen is different.” “I heard you say that when you were all over Wendy. Why did you even leave her? She is smart, beautiful, bold and tough. I thought she was your pure gold some weeks ago?” “I don’t know, since I started hanging around Maureen, I can’t get her off my mind.” “It was the same with Wendy. I knew you were never into Chinwe and Enem, but you led them to believe that you were. As for Wendy, she was the ‘bomb’. Now she is not. You are very likely to find another pure gold after you have slept with Maureen. Maybe, you should take a good look at yourself. In how many weeks on campus you have already started and ended three relationships. You probably want to watch it.” “I was too hasty with the other girls. Maureen is the one.” “Don’t say a word to me when you no longer want her.” “That will never happen!!!”

“Mau-mau, what is it? You have been looking very sad for the past few days,” asked Foluke, her best friend. Maureen narrated the incidents related to the letters to her. “I want to forget the guy and walk away. After all, nothing had really started between us, so it is good that I found out early. But I am sad. I want to be happy, but I am not and I don’t know why.” “Is it that you don’t know why or you don’t want to face the truth?” “How do you mean Foluke?” “Normally, you’d let things like this slide without them bothering you. Maybe you like this guy. Maybe a part of you thinks he is telling the truth that he had nothing to do with those girls.” Maureen thought about what Foluke said for a moment. “Maybe you are right. I think there is a part of me that does fancy this guy. He is cute, you know. Smart, tall, cool…he is the whole package.” “But if indeed, he has been sleeping around with everything in skirt, I would not really say that he is smart, cool and cute…and his height and looks would certainly make no sense, unless you have grown attached to those things.” “You are right, but…” Maureen paused again to think about the situation. “Maybe I am attached to him. I think that is the point which explains why I am very mad at him and the whole scenario. And perhaps, a part of me is hanging on the slim chance that he is telling the truth.”

“Now, we have to look at this with some maturity and clarity. If you could, please set all your feelings for this guy aside. If you have concerns about him, which I believe you do and those are serious concerns, you may want to give him a wide berth for some time. Look into the situation and see what happens. If he is telling the truth, we will find out. If he is lying, time will clarify that too. Just don’t go back on your words for now. Keep saying no and see how things play out.” “You are always smart Foluke. I will do as you said.” “Good. Now let’s go get some food.” “There he is over there,” Maureen said pointing. “Now I see why he turned your head. The guy is a real good looker,” Foluke, pointed out. “Isn’t he?” “Yes he is, but he won’t be such a good looker after he has broken your heart. Maintain your self-dignity for now and ride out the storm.” They hid behind a bus to keep from being spotted by Donald as he walked by. When Maureen got home that evening, she had another letter waiting for her. It read;

In case you are still thinking of dating Donald, just know that he has slept with at least four girls in the past few weeks since arriving on campus. The girls involved include, Wendy, Chinwe and Enem in Law and Leticia in Business Administration.
Just making sure you don’t fall in love with the wrong guy.
