Depths of Darkness – Modern day – Year: November 2008 to 2009

They kept yelling for help until their voices faded, and in place of their human voices were the hissing of serpents. All four of them had morphed into black mammoth serpents. Their heads towered high to the ceiling and an endless fold of their bodies coiled in a heap on the floor. Mr. Silvanus beamed with a sly smile and spoke with an excitement which suggested he had achieved some feat, “The children of Iniye! Behold who you are!

This is your true nature. Though you walk and mingle amongst humans as one of them, what you appear like right now is who you truly are! Welcome to the fellowship of serpents!” In a quick move, Mr. Silvanus threw himself to the floor and began to transform into an older version of the four serpents before him. When he had fully transformed, the serpent he changed into had two horns and several spikes along its spine. It looked uglier than any breed of serpent any one had seen. After the serpents had momentarily stood on their tails accessing each other, they hit the floor and slid out of the underground apartment with amazing speed. Mr. Silvanus was leading them out for a kill; as soon as they slithered out of his palatial home they vanished from sight.

The scene of their attack was an exclusive night club in Port Harcourt. At the back of the club they appeared, this time looking a lot less bigger than they did when they were in Mr. Silvanus underground apartment. Mr. Silvanus’ voice echoed over their heads as they waited for orders, “Mr. Akpoborio and his men are our target, someone has empowered the kingdom through blood sacrifice to remove them from the earth to night. Just a little dose of your venom will do the work.” As if his words which echoed in their heads drove them insane, the four serpents representing the children of Iniye, excitedly slid into the night club building. Just as they slid into the club, Mr. Silvanus changed into his human form and walked into the club. His intention was to revel in the slaughter which was to happen in minutes. Up the night club building were a few exclusive lounges, reserved for the rich and mighty. In one of such lounges was Mr. Akpoborio, some of his friends and his newly formed campaign team. He had a few weeks earlier made known to some of the political godfathers in Rivers State that he intended to run for the governorship position in the state when the time was due. And from the look of things he was going to make a splash. What bothered those who did not want him was that he was starting his campaign very early and from the grass root. They knew if he was to fly the achievements of his foundation, The Penguin, he would get a lot of people hooked. The Penguin had done a lot for the people of the state; the foundation had rebuilt primary schools, health centres and full scale hospitals, had Kitchen for all Project which fed the poor in many parts of his state; drilled borehole water for many villages, had many students on scholarships and sent many more to skill acquisition centres. Mr. Akpoborio had all the roads in his village and neighbouring towns tarred; and he did all that without the support of the government; so many who were aware of his heart to help the poor were already asking, “What would this man do if he became a governor?”

His lounge wasn’t just filled with friends and campaign team members; there were girls, young girls hurled in with the allure of money. Most of them were stark naked and danced shamelessly to the crazed beat of Terry-G’s “Ginja Your Swaggah”; and a few others who still had the least strain of morality left in them, clad themselves in G-strings and braziers while they rocked their bodies to the beat in manners that would make their mothers shed blood for tears. In simple terms, the scene at the lounge cut the appearance of Sodom and Gomorrah just before God set it on fire; in-between their feet, death meandered – the children of Iniye in their serpent form. They were heading first for the prime target, Mr. Akpoborio; who was busy splashing money on young girls who danced nude to please him. At first he felt something gently nibble at his ankles and so he shook his legs; but it increased in speed and intensity, so he stomped his feet on the floor and looked under. The sight he met sent him flying into the air in fear; the four serpents gave him no chance, they had tasted blood, they had gone maniac. Like monkeys leaping from tree to tree, the four serpents followed him into the air and then all in the lounge saw them. There was a stampede as everyone tried to get out of the lounge. The security aids attached to Mr. Akpoborio opened fire on the serpents – that was a mistake - it only got them angrier and they began to morph in size. At the door people crowded and could not get out of the lounge because the door just won’t open. Outside Mr. Silvanus watched through the glass wall with infernal glee. In their rage the serpents tore off Mr. Akpoborio’s limbs, arms, and head, and ripped his bowel open.

The lounge having been built sound proof, no one could hear their heart-wrenching wails. Those who saw what was happening were guests who passed in front of the lounge glass entrance, which was the only part which was not tinted. They were the ones who ran down stairs to inform the club management. Having taken care of the prime target, the serpents turned on the crowd and began to tear them apart. Happily Mr. Silvanus watched as heads, limbs, arms, intestines and chunks of flesh flew into the air. In few minutes, the un-tinted glass entrance to the lounge was tainted with thick blood and all grew silent. The security which the club management invited could not open the door to the lounge; and even if they could, they were too afraid to go in. Satisfied, Mr. Silvanus turned and walked away and immediately the door to the lounge opened of its accord. What lay inside the lounge was a heap of mangled human flesh and a stream of blood.  The four serpents had strangely disappeared. Back at Mr. Silvanus’ underground apartment the four serpents appeared and changed into the four children of Iniye. They were soaked with blood from head to toes. They could not bear the knowledge of what they had done to fellow human beans; it sickened them. One after another, they began to throw up, vomiting human body parts. Just them Mr. Silvanus walked in, glowing happily; Martha thought to herself when she saw how happy Mr. Silvanus was, “This man must be the devil himself.” As though Ada heard her thought, she sprang forward and grabbed Mr. Silvanus by the neck and slammed him on the hard floor, yelling, “You are Lucifer! I am done serving you!” Mr. Silvanus momentarily writhed on the floor in pain and then shifted his shape into a serpent. He did not attack her in his serpent form; obviously he did that to protect himself. Attacking Ada would have been his death sentence. He knew the four children would have had him for breakfast. Turning her back to him, Ada went back to vomiting the remains of human parts inside of her,

By morning their bags were all packed; they were ready to go back to the city. They had promised each other that they would kill no more and would search till they find a way to break the hold of the serpent kingdom over them. Mr. Silvanus knew that the children of Iniye were angry with him and would probably not trust him again. They came to Asarama for solution to their problems; instead he used them to slaughter men and women who had done them no wrong. Though Mr. Silvanus held them in awe because of their power, he however warned them, “You have tasted blood in large dozes; now your powers have grown. The things you can do now are beyond the imaginations of mortal men. Don’t, please don’t try to resist the serpent in you, and don’t turn against the serpent kingdom, it will be harder for you.” They ignored him and left. They were determined to find a way out and they would stop at nothing. Two days after they returned to the city all four of them woke up in the morning with shocking scenes in their rooms. Ada found a man lying next to her in her bed, fully alive. The sight of the man sent her shouting hysterically. The man startled out of sleep, wondering where he was and hurried to put his clothes on. From the other rooms Ada could hear shouts as well; the rooms of Martha, Obinna and Joel were littered with bloody mess. None of them could remember what happened. Just like Mr. Silvanus warned, the serpent in them had tasted a lot of blood and therefore had grown stronger. It had begun to make use of their bodies without their knowledge; it is going to be harder to stop the serpent from now on.

After they had cleaned the mess in their rooms, all four of them gathered to ask the man Ada found in her bed how he found his way into their house. It was quite a tale the man had to tell, “I stopped for your sister on the road and we went to a hotel, Purple Ocean to be precise. How I ended up in your house is what I can’t explain.” Ada was stunned and her mouth hung open. She could not believe what the man said. “Look mister man, I haven’t been out of this house in days, so how could you have seen me on the road and picked me up? Okay where did I tell you I was going?” The man was further shocked, “Excuse me lady, what are you saying? How can you ask me where you were going? You were going nowhere! No be ashawo you dey do? You were hawking yourself with other ladies on the street when I met you!” Ada covered her mouth in shock, shame and disgrace. Her siblings were stunned out of their wits. On the other hand they thought, at least Ada has someone to ask questions, we do not have anyone. All we have to ask questions are litters of human flesh in our rooms, and human flesh don’t talk. “Oga I am not a sex hawker! I am a virgin! The only time I have had sex with a man was in my dream. It couldn’t have been me,” Ada said amid sobs. “Ladies and gentlemen, I am as stunned as you all are. I should have been waking up this morning in Purple Ocean and not in your house. Something is obviously wrong here.” “Excuse me sir, did you have sex with me in Purple Ocean?” The man paused and wondered how to answer Ada, he could tell the young girl was in terrible pain. While he thought how to answer her, Joel yelled at him, “Answer the question! Did you touch my sister?!” Martha had to jump to her feet and dragged Joel away. Pleadingly Ada looked at the man for an honest answer. “Yes I did,” said the man. “God in heaven save me or I die!!!” Ada yelled.
